#1 open a terminal[1]
#2 switch to the (hidden) bitcoin folder
Code:
cd ~/.bitcoin
#3 open log file
Code:
leafpad debug.log

Depending on your version of ubuntu the text editor (gedit) is named differently. for lubuntu its leafpad

also, if bitcoind is running, open up terminal and type

Code:
bitcoin-cli getinfo

this will give you information about the current status of the bitcoind.
How are you starting the bitcoind?

give me the result of

Code:
sudo systemctl status bitcoind

Hi Reynaldo,

I'm running ubuntu with lubuntu-core desktop

Once I do the shutdown there is no output, just a blank screen.

If there is a way to look at logs (unknown to me)

I will happily replicate the error so I can post the output.

If shutdown the machine without shutting down bitcoind it will not shutdown unless I do a hard shutdown.

If I stop bitcoind and then order the shutdown. It shuts ddown like it should.
