Updating the software will not touch any of the blockchain data as that is located elsewhere. There is no need to uninstall it, just install the new version on top.If you installed bitcoind from the PPA, you should be able to upgrade in the same way you installed or by running

If you did not install from the PPA, then just download the latest version from bitcoin.org and install it as you did originally.

2 cores is not a lot of computing power, but that shouldn't really matter.

How are you trying to get the debug.log file? It a file on the system, you shouldn't be able to access it through any web server as you are doing now.
Hi tried getting the contents of the debug.log but ended up with nothing will try a cron.

Bitcoind shouldn't be crashing. Instead of making bitcoind restart on every crash, it would be better to figure out why it is crashing in the first place.

One way to keep bitcoind up is to make a cronjob that just starts bitcoind. If it is running, the cronjob will do nothing since you can't have two bitcoinds running from the same datadir. If it is not running, the cronjob will start it.

Its been over a week I havent been able to synchronize on an Ubuntu linux system whereby the bitcoind daemon keeps crashing.
What would be the right way to make sure this process keeps running and is restarted immidiately if it crashes ?
