How exactly would that discredit bitcoin?

That's like say a hammer is discredited because it cracked through a skull with ease. No, that's a really good hammer because all a hammer is supposed to do it be good at hitting things hard.

not everyone is rational. most least the masses!

Its funny you mention that because during the local occupy protests in Melbourne one thing the Mayor tried to use to discredit the protest was that they had "weapons" such as hammers (to use for tent pegs) and knives ( for the community kitchen). It was akin to a politician claiming a caravan park is a terrorist training camp because they use gas bottles which might be used for car bombs.

A hammer can do that!?!

I have one of those in the garage!

They sell those at family friendly places such as Walmart and Home Depot!

We need some laws to deal with this!

You are a hammerer?

Moderators: Is this the kind of element you want associated with bitcoin? HAMMERERS?!

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the forum "staff" are hammer-friendly: supporting and even encouraging carpentry and other hammer related activities. Theymos, would we find a hammer in your garage if we looked? (Don't bother answering. I'm sure the community already has a good idea.)

Allow me to then answer that for theymos.

Since it was established that a hammer(er) is a weapon, and the French are not too keen on War (read violence), and theymos is taking French in college, then no, he does not have a hammer(er) at his disposal. Hammer bad/Feather good.

bitcoin is the very best for ransoms:

coins are transferred, not able to be gotten back, and the perpetrator can literally wait YEARS AND YEARS before moving the money, plotting out their exact laundering strategy in as much time as is needed.

Let's not get off track here, hammers are the best at skull crackery. A perpetrator can crack a skull in literally SECONDS OR LESS, splintering bone into soft brain matter as desired.

The current Romney tax return hostage news has me wondering how well Bitcoin would withstand politically a "Lindbergh baby" style ransom event.   No running across town to different telephone booths.  No jumping out of the tail of airplanes over the Pacific Northwest, ... Heck there might even be factions evil enough to do it just to discredit Bitcoin.
