I have 4 machines running two (and for a time, three while one blown PSU was getting replaced) 5970's and they are running great
Why did you only run three 5970s on a machine only while waiting to get PSU replacement? If it works, why not make it permanent,  was there a problem?

they use up four PCI-E slots too (AFAIK you can put three 5970s on a single MOBO, which is equivalent of six 5870s).

Of what i read, it seems that you can't.
More than one 5970 do not work on single mainboard. It was tested on multiple mainboards & power supplies (it is not power supply problem) by somebody on this forum.
I have 4 machines running two (and for a time, three while one blown PSU was getting replaced) 5970's and they are running great.  See my YouTube mining videos.  Presently they're each running two 5970 plus one 5870 just fine.  Now under Windows they are a pain in the ass to get working together, but not under Ubuntu.  Under Ubuntu I have 5 miner instances open on each machine.

5870's are the most cost-effective anyway.

Also you can put four 5870s in a single motherboard and they will work. 5970's don't work this way, i don't know about 6990.
The calculation of cost-effectiveness is somewhat subjective. What's the percentage of electricity in the overall production cost (it sure is rising fast), how do you amortize the initial cost on MOBO,PSU, case etc. Two 5870s use 30% more electricity than a 5970, they use up four PCI-E slots too (AFAIK you can put three 5970s on a single MOBO, which is equivalent of six 5870s).

But given the current video card market condition, using 5870s or 5850s may make more sense.

Long term I believe it has helped moving the computing-as-utility concept one step further, made earthlings much more capable of solving difficult mathematical problems in the future.

Internet bubble left US and some other parts of the world with vast amount of optical fiber communication infrastructure, which benefited survivors for the rest of the decade. If Bitcoin is a bubble (which I don't believe it is) and bursts, other distributed computing projects will enjoy a more abundant resource base.

Hardware industry is being challenged by Bitcoin to produce faster CPU/GPUs with much lower power consumption, rearranging electrons in and out transistors should only use very minimal amount of energy. All those heat Bitcoin miners are dealing with is sign of inefficiencies of computer chips.  According to http://www.craville.110mb.com/physics/superconductors.htm

CPU (including GPU) as THE most technologically advance and complex product made on earth, it's the gateway to the future. Any projects or initiatives promoting this advancement will benefit human race long term, and government or organization trying to suppress such movements will be proven corrupt and "on the wrong side of history"
