Two things I want to suggest to all people who often forget:

1. Use lightweight wallets such as ethereum
2. If you use core, sync first before trying to transfer funds.

Many of us won't sync core wallets daily. It is good to sync first.

Alright, I figured out what's going on here. Sometime ago I transferred all my coins from my bitcoin core to Coinbase. This transfer was conflicted as well until it updated. So the reason why the payment I sent never made it is because I didn't actually have any coins in my wallet, though it was showing so since I was so far behind on transactions.

Ditching Bitcoin core forever, it's way too slow and really hogs resources on my PC. Sorry for the confusion!
Glad to see that you resolved it. Although I don't think you should ditch Bitcoin Core for Coinbase. Rather I recommend that you use a lightweight desktop wallet such as Electrum. It is still secure as you control everything and it doesn't require the entire blockchain so it does not use as many resources as Bitcoin Core.

Huh. Strange. Try starting it with the -rescan option this time. You don't need to have -zapwallettxes anymore.

Ok, I ran bitcoin core with -zapwallettxes. The transaction is now gone, however my wallet balance is zero!!! What should I do now?

Once your wallet is synced, you need to remove that transaction from your wallet. This will then allow you to spend your Bitcoin as it is not actually gone. To do this, you must start Bitcoin Core (I assume it is Bitcoin Core because that is the only wallet that has -000 in the txid) with the -zapwallettxes option which will remove your transaction. Then you can spend the Bitcoin again and it should go through.

Also, do you know the address(es) where the coins were located?  If so, you should be able to see if there are still there or if they were sent at another time somewhere else.

Btw, make a backup of your wallet now (even if you already have several) just to be safe.

If it was done last week, as the OP has stated, without a synced wallet I believe the time frame in order to recover those lost transactions have passed.

It might help analyze the problem if you could tell us some (or all) of the following:

  • Address you sent the payment to
  • Amount of the payment
  • Date and time that you sent the payment (and time zone)
  • Addresses in your wallet that you have received payments to
  • Output that you get when you run the following command in the "Console" tab of the "Debug Window" under the "Help" menu

Code:
getrawtransaction ff96ced7178cb83d6c17cfa677bef877ec67e37061ad71fc2e4cca13c2b84ac4

Last week I attempted an online purchase with btc. I paid out of my wallet however the transaction seemingly failed on the vendor's website. I told them the btc were sent but they said they had never received it. I thought it was because my wallet was 150 weeks behind on transactions, so I let it update however the transaction is showing as 'conflicted' in my wallet. The transaction shows as ff96ced7178cb83d6c17cfa677bef877ec67e37061ad71fc2e4cca13c2b84ac4-000, but blockchain can't locate any transactions matching this hash. Where did my btc go???

Sometimes blockchain does not list some transaction but some others do like blockr.io or blocktrail, i searched for your tx hash there but can't be found. If you have sent from your wallet then the funds should be returned to your wallet.

The actual transaction hash is ff96ced7178cb83d6c17cfa677bef877ec67e37061ad71fc2e4cca13c2b84ac4 without the -000 on the end.

However, when you look that up the transaction doesn't exist. This means that your Bitcoin did not go anywhere. Because you were not synced, it is possible that your transaction was spending from inputs that were already spent from and this caused a double spend which is rejected by the network.

Once your wallet is synced, you need to remove that transaction from your wallet. This will then allow you to spend your Bitcoin as it is not actually gone. To do this, you must start Bitcoin Core (I assume it is Bitcoin Core because that is the only wallet that has -000 in the txid) with the -zapwallettxes option which will remove your transaction. the -000 looks odd for a hash. Try removing that in your search for you coins.
The transaction times have had major delays in the last 2 weeks, when was the transaction made and how much was the miner's fee did you apply to the transaction so to speed it up?
This is a really odd transaction with the -000, as even with and without it the transaction cannot be found. Maybe try retransporting these bitcoins to another wallet and see if that brings up an error. -000 could be an error code, but it's very unlikely. The transaction probably is not unconfirmed as unconfirmed transactions quickly become returned to wallet usually within 5 days, assuming it has been near 5.
