I do not want to burst your bubble, but the same people behind Facebook and Twitter are the people that are members of this forum. This forum

are just as dangerous as any other Social media platform. We have loads of scammers and government shills and criminals on here too. Look who

was behind MtGox and where did he post? Do not create a situation where you are fooled by this forum and some of it's members.  Wink

The OP has not realized that the biggest scammers are all located in the altcoin/announcements subforum. It is one of the most active part of the forum too with lots of newbies wanting to hit something big.

Nothing new really. MtGox had to start somewhere and advertise, I don't believe they were planning an exit scam when they started their Bitcoin journey.
If one of the running businesses closed down and owners decided to run with the money you'd be able tos ay the same that crooks are writing on bitcointalk. Every forum is like that. Most people writing about Bitcoin on Reddit are also Bitcointalk members.

Exactly. We may see a few good people but there are surely a big bunch of scammers, hackers, ect they just hide their ass. This forum is far to be disneyland from what i read daily... About MtGox, are you telling he has an account here? What's the username because I would love to read him/them  Grin

Come to think of it guys, This forum is full of  Anonymous users. We barely no each other yet Millions of Dollars worth of Bitcoin is handed to Trusted Members for safe keeping. Even non Anonymous Social Media like Facebook and Twitter would not encourage you to trust the most trusted person on their platform.

Why am writing this, some people erroneously equate anonymity with crimes which is why they don't bother about government obsession with centralizing Bitcoin/Blockchain believing  it will keep away bad people.  Facebook is a den of scammers even the owner don't seem to care. I feel safe here than the Social Media site and others like it.

The entire blockchain can be much safer than the entire World which is "under government control" if it self-regulate like Bitcointalk or even better. It takes only smart people to make this possible NOT politicians, elites and opaque government.
Bitcoin/Blockchain was created to be independent of government control. It's more transparent than the best countries on Earth. Blockchain will solve the pervasive corruption on Earth.  Handing it over to the Elites and governments will end up destroying its purpose.
A completely free market system is pretty wonderful, is it not?

This forum, through Bitcoin, is a great example of the free market, in my opinion. We have users who make sure transactions are carried out so both parties receive the value they negotiated to trade, you have people from all over the world selling their items and shipping them to buyers, it's a great system and I don't think it could be done any better. The lack of frills and whistles also helps to exemplify the bare-bones model provided by BTCT, and people are allowed to dress it up as they please.

The issue of hiding under anonymity does not have anything to do with bitcoin, anyone who is by default a scammer will use any means necessary to achieve that objective and even come to look at it those who have proven themselves to be worthwhile individuals, check their personal lives, they are upright individuals who wouldn't compromise intergrity and morality for a few dollars which is the same thing about those who go about scamming people. They are morally deficient and not in any way related to blockchain.

The model is awesome don't get me wrong, but this is really just like any other online forum when it comes down to it. There's going to be some people that are the most trusted on here that are entrusted with holding certain things, be it money, items, accounts, and so on and so forth. But this is also present on other forums, so it's not like we're doing anything revolutionary when it comes to stuff like that. We also have the same flaws that any other forum would have.

We're not immune to stuff just cause we're the bitcoin forum, the biggest trusted people are sometimes the ones that backstab us all when we could've thought that they could be trusted. And when they do, everyone loses a lot.

It is awesome and I do love this forum with my entire heart, but we do have some issues as well and I wouldn't want to ignore them.

Can't really say that this forum is as safe as you said it is, I've encountered some threads and they are talking about scammers in this very forum. I went to the services to find other ways to earn bitcoin and as I browse different threads, most of them are scams. I read their replies and some says the manager or the one who gave the task like register in some website then they will receive a specific amount of bitcoin, suddenly didn't reply to the thread when other members finished the task given.

This place is full of scammers too. Look for Altcoin sections, were dozens of ICO scams appear each month, or Investor-based games were scammers run Ponzi schemes. "Self-regulation" is pretty weak here - all you can do is open accusation and watch scammer get red trust to his account, but most times it's just a fresh throwaway or bought or hacked accounts, and very rarely it results in return of stolen funds, which should always be #1 priority in any legal system. Bitcointalk is far from perfect, you need to be smart and experienced to not get scammed here. But the good thing is, Bitcoin's network and community can't steal money from your wallet unless you send transaction yourself, while in real world governments have lots of ways to do it - they can tax you, devalue money with inflation, seize your assets whenever they want, etc.

The forum is here for anyone to join, whether they be honest and have concern about their impact to others or to practice being a scam artist with some degree of anonymity to help get away with it.  I think most people join out of self interest, to learn more about cryptocurrencies and possibly find ways to generate revenue through various avenues, some share their experience for others to learn and some are here to take advantage of those that may be a little naive or trusting without needing credibility.  Not a whole different than real life imo.  Only difference I see is that a scam artist doesn't really receive much of a consequence.  They'll probably just ditch that particular account that has been flagged and create or purchase a new one as you mentioned.

As far as the online world is concerned, there is no holy ground so to speak. Everywhere there can be scammers who are just ready to take our money and run with them. Sad as it may seem, what is happening online can just be reflective of the things we do offline or probably we are bringing in the many things we are doing offline to the online world.

We have to do our own due diligence especially in transacting business or anything that involves money. Judging on the success of many ICOs so far, it seems to there is indeed a better rate of trust here in the blockchain related community than anywhere else though it does not negate the fact that scam can happen anytime.

I love this forum and it's model they have simple rules do deals with trusted members, avoid newbies for trade and only trade with them if they use escrow. Again for escrow there are set members who do this service and they have been doing it. If say some members loose their way and decide to cheat then immediately they receive a negative feedback and that's a best part of it.

Thanks for understandings this well enough.
There are ruthless scammers and psychopaths everywhere but how things are made difficult for them is what matters.

This forum isn't perfect. But imagine how things go here... it blows my mind considering it is totally anonymous site. Hopefully the forum will keep getting safer with the use of other ingenious ideas like advanced techs/softwares and community resources.

In a way, yes! Smiley There's the trust you have, that users built up over years, endless transactions, but it can be easily broke by greed, and there are many cases out there of traders/buyers/escrow who had ran away with the goods/BTC.

The trust model is cool, as it takes time and no one would want to lose all that effort, but you should never trust anyone with a *significant* amount of BTC, even with the most 'trusted' member here. Smiley

Those anonymous people you are saying who are trusted here has proven that they can be trusted to escrow a million dollars worth of bitcoin, bitcoin forum does not encourage to trust them too like what Facebook and Twitter do, the users decide to trust those trusted users because they have handled many successful transactions. Because of this you are right that bitcoin forum transactions are somewhat safer than facebook transactions. Even if you hand bitcoin to the elites, they still cannot regulate it so handing it too them won't destroy bitcoin's future but one cannot hand bitcoin over to them too because they don't own all of bitcoin.
