A few days ago I got the news that Bitcointalk member Joerii (Joeri Pross) passed away, leaving behind a wife and 2 young kids.

A lot of you may have known him as he was one of the "oldbie" users on this forum and community manager for a lot of projects, like Factom.

He went missing august 30th and his body was found september 2nd.
I just got to found out this sad news, so really  painful.
Looking at him I feel so petty for his kids losing their father at this tender age, and I feel very worried.  Despite we members do not know ourselves much but the forum has brought us all as family,  this is  very sad news for me to lose one of us, I just wish is wife and children more strength at this point to overcome this painful lose of life. May his rest in peace.

That’s sad!
Never heard of him but, getting to know him and what this would mean to his left behind, young kids at that and what this would mean for them, growing up without a father figure coupled with the circumstances surrounding his death, that’s just awful. Missing for few days only to be found dead in 3days, it’s such a pity for him.
I really hope he must have planted a trail to allow his left behind have access to his crypto portfolio and accumulations.

May his soul depart this world to rest peacefully in the bosom of whatever he believed in and his left behind find the heart to condole this irreplaceable lose in there existence. Another lose of a forum quality from what OP speaks of him.

I must admit that I'm not famikiar with his name, despite that he was old time member. I never interacted with him, probably mainly because he was active on altcoin board. But from what I read now, it looks that he was good man.
It's always sad to read news that Bitcointalk member passed away, especially at such young age and in such tragic circumstances.
Rest in Peace, Joeri...

I remember that he manage one campaign here before that offers highest rate among all campaign's except Chipmixer.
Man, that's weird--he's been a member the entire time I've been here, and I don't remember ever seeing his username at all.  And it's not like he didn't make a lot of posts, either.  Maybe not a ton for someone who's been a member of bitcointalk for 10 years, but still.  I had to look at his post history, and it's clear why his name didn't ring a bell, because he posted a lot in the altcoin section.

I hate to see young people die, and looking at that picture of him he looks as though he's bursting with energy and enthusiasm.  So although I didn't know him, RIP Joerii.  It's obvious he touched a lot of peoples' lives, and my condolences to his family and friends.

This line of statement makes it more pitiable . It seems his death was mysterious and full of misery 💔.
according to the GoFundMe page, an investigation revealed that he slipped when he went to pee, landed very hard and fell into the water. it was such a truly unfortunate accident.
My bad that I didn't read the article. But my guess was accurate. Such a death should be painful to both the dead and the living.
Whenever I read about the death of a member of this forum, first I feel pity to the family and secondly I will conclude that it is such an opportunity for bitcoin to get lost. It is high time we began to pay good attention to these threads discussing private key and family members. We should ensure the bitcoin we hold don't die with us whenever we are no more. There should be atleast a member of our family we should trust. Even if the person is not trustworthy, we have to take the risk because anything can happen anytime.

It's so sad seeing that the bitcointalk platform lost a member. It is much a burden for his young family to be going through this experience. I must say this is a tough time for them as they mourn the demise of their father. It is unfortunate that he left behind two kids who would miss the fatherly love and care they deserve from him.

I see a go fund me campaign ongoing and so far it is going on successful. If I may ask, can it be replicated here?

Oh, wow, I feel sorry that he died at such a young age too, and the fact that he still has two young children is really going to be a lot of responsibility for the wife. The sure thing is, we're all going to go home (to the afterlife) one day, and no one knows when and why, whether it's for good or bad. Like a few people here have said that they don't know the user, I am only hearing about him for the first time today, and I also thank you, Turing, for bringing up the notice in the forum.

RIP. If you believed in God, then I pray that your soul finds peace in God.

As far as I know, he was a part of the mintlayer project. It was a quite different altcoin project, not like the traditional one. He managed a campaign for mintlayer here last year.

RIP, Joerii!!

I checked his posts now and discovered he spent quite a time managing the Mintlayer project. But am not familiar with him, maybe he was inactive when I became active or he was active when I was not. My heart weeps for the young family he left behind. Life is full of sad events and death is one of them. RIP, Joerii.

The most painful part of the story of Joeri Pross is that he was just 40 and had a young family. His body was found in a river and the police ruled out crime. Which means that he either committed suicide or accidentally drowned. The rate of increase of suicide is becoming very high every day. You meet somebody today who looks happy, you might even party, drink, and laugh together but the next day a piece of news will break that he/she has committed suicide. People are dying in silence because of so many issues that they keep secret until they finally consume these issues. This is why it is important to treat people nicely so that you don't contribute to the secrets problems they are facing. May God show him mercy and grant him eternal rest.
Rip Joeri Pross. I feel especially sad knowing that the one of the likely cause of his death is suicide. Just like you rightly pointed out, it's not easy dealing with depression and have no one who you could share it with. I'm even sadder that his little kids will be without a father, missing out on the pivotal role he'd play in their lives. I didn't have the chance to interact or come across such a user but I know his absence will be greatly felt here in the forum.
Losing a loved one can be such a sick pain in the gut and I can only imagine the pain his family must be going through especially as he went missing for days only to be found dead..
Rest on, Joeri.

When you see news like this, you start to think about how a person can suddenly die. All our topics in the topic of reputation are sheer vanity of vanities. All of them turn into such a small thing compared to the grief that befell this young man and his family.
When you put it in that manner, it really does bring a new angle to the word vanity when used in context of the reputation thread. There is much more to life to look forward to rather than to be held back by vanities.

I also want to express my condolences to the family; maybe one day they will come here just to read his life story here. I would also like to say: always tell your children and loved ones how much you love them and do not spare your feelings, because there may come a time when it will be too late.
I would like to echo the sentiments you have expressed so elegantly about condolences for the family. Also your advice to never spare feelings for those that you love and to tell them you love them otherwise there might not be another opportunity.

Btw has anybody created a threads/index list (hall of fame a such) about people who pass away and leave forum for good?
Yes, when i used the search button i see Tranthidung created a "hall of fame" thread[1], though it hasn't be updated in more than a year, and i don't know if they plan on making any future update.

As stated in the second article, there's a "GoFundMe" started for his wife and kids.
Already 585 donations have been made and €18,315 has been raised.

It is extremely sad news whenever an announcement is made about a forum member passing away. I cannot recall having any contact with him, I did not know him personally but my heart goes out to his family and friends and also to all those that knew him and those who held him in high esteem from the forum.

It is because of very poignant moments such as these that allow for moments of self analysis and reflection, when I wonder how things can change from one situation to another within the blink of an eye and what steps can be taken to financially protect loved ones for when the worst does happen. This is heartbreaking news.

Though it will never soften the blow of his loss, at least his family will not have to go through a protracted period of trauma if his death was being investigated as suspicious. Investigators have ruled it was an accident and I am sure we all send our sympathies and support to his family and friends.

I spoke to him on Telegram a lot, he always had ideas and was very creative, driven and he really could organize something and keep his promises.
Honest and generous too, not really caring about money but more about "being part of the game" in general.

I'm not saying I was among his best friends but we got along fine and had many things / interests in common.

"De mortuis nil nisi bonum", the Romans said. But about him, I couldn't think of any negative.
From the way you refer to him it is clear Joeri Pross was a good person, it is difficult to comprehend what his wife and children are going through. I hope the donation target is exceeded by a huge margin as it will contribute towards the benefit of his family.

Sometimes I do feel sad seeing that someone was an active member here and all of the sudden illness came and the next the person is gone forever and will never come back again, that's why today we that are living aren't meant to take things of life very important and so highly as one day the alerm would surely ring. All the efforts knowledge and power, the wealth and firm are just gone immediately the real owner closes eyes as disease.

Again many of us who are very wealthy should at least get their POD (Payable on death) to enable their next of kings have access to their father's, mother's or relatives wealth, especially country like Nigeria would frustrate the family of the disease if this form aren't filled by the disease before departure., This is another great lesson we should learned to show love to one another irrespective of levels and ranks as we know one day we may all leave here and the younger ones will also takeover.

Please his family should accept my condolences.
Although I never came encountered with him in this forum but it's worth being sad for at least 20 minutes knowing that he is our member here.

Fairwell Joerii we will all miss you sir.

Whenever I hear the news of somewhat a young person, I am always bittered. Happy to see that the GoFund is getting attention.

There is another thing that needs attention. And that is his private keys. I believe he made a provision that his family will get access to his private keys. Being a legendary member of this forum, gives a likeliness that he might own bitcoin before his death.

Of course this is sad news for his family, relatives and anyone who knew him. I never knew Joerii - so I don't know much about him. Some users like joker_josue, coupable, dragonvslinux seem to have often deal with Joerii - so I think he is a well-known user too.
I worked with him on the last signature campaign he ran a few years ago, and we communicated several times via private messages. I remember that he was very understanding and funny, which is what encouraged me to leave a positive review on his profile. He can be considered one of the few members who joined the forum early and did not leave until death. Thanks to him for all the support he has provided over the years and his contribution to making the forum a healthy space.
He died at a young age, as he appears in the photo, and the donation campaign on gofundme does not give good indications of his condition before his death and the condition of his family. I hope he rests in peace and his family is safe after his death.

He was only 40 to die unexpected suddenly, but I hear a lot more cases like this in last few years.
I was reading news reports you posted translated from Dutch and they are not saying what was the cause of death, but they know he it was not a crime, he just went out to walk.
Did they found out the real cause of his death? I saw in gofundeme that he died from fatal accident as he slipped and fall into water.

This is such a sad news, I don't know this user particular because he seems not to be that active on the forum anymore, put I am very touched by this news of his demise because I personally don't like coming across such news of we losing a forum member here, maybe because we are generally like family here.

And again, being a man as well who currently have a wife and two young daughters as well, ( 7 and 2 respectively) makes this whole thing more touching, but I understand that death is something we all owe and a price we all must pay, I pray his soul find rest in the Bossom of his creator, and that almighty God give his family the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss .

It’s so sad to hear we lost a member, in a forum that’s anonymous like this, there are many times things may happen to one of us and the community may never hear about it. My condolences to his family, I don’t think they know much about his bitcointalk account, they have so much going on right now that the last place they would look is a forum account. I’m not familiar with the user, even though he was a campaign manager and was active until 2021. I think a neutral tag should be given to the account so even if it’s hacked in the future, we will know for sure that the account changed hands.

To be honest, I don't know him, in fact I didn't realize that he had handled several campaigns to the extent that he was active as a forum user. But however, it is always sad to hear that someone is die and leaving his wife and children without proper financial provisions. Of course, everyone is afraid of this, but as a fellow user of the bitcointalk forum, I also express my condolences to him.

However, the question that may be right now is not the amount of donations the family received, but whether the Joerii family also managed to gain access to a number of Joerii crypto storage wallets?

As far as I know he wasn't a "big roller" in crypto, he had a family to support, a mortgage to pay, etc. We never talked about money, as I said, he just liked to be part of it, "being in the crypto game". Just earning his money, being creative with a team of people (see first link in opening post).

And right now, nobody is earning the money for his family.

For me, it's pretty much the same, crypto didn't make me rich but it got me into a job I wouldn't be in without the existence of crypto.

I remember that he manage one campaign here before that offers highest rate among all campaign's except Chipmixer. Mintlayer (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/hold-mintlayer-sig-campaign-srheroleg-up-to-130wk-in-btcmlt-tokens-5366033) is the campaign I was referring. I didn't manage to join on this campaign since I'm enrolled on different campaigns but I'm sure that participants of his campaign will remember him since he offer a high paying campaign that time without a problem.

As far as I know, he was a part of the mintlayer project. It was a quite different altcoin project, not like the traditional one. He managed a campaign for mintlayer here last year.

RIP, Joerii!!

Yes, the Gofundme has reached the expected amount to cover some initial costs. But to stay in their house, a little more (around €32.000 more) is still needed, so it's still open for donations.

...

I don't expect to find donations on a forum where everyone is pretty much anonymous but every Euro counts...

I don't understand why they only put €16,000 as a goal, then, and not €32,000, I guess with the emotional shock they didn't think about it properly. Don't they accept donations in Bitcoin, apart from gofundme? For a previous forum member I suppose it would be logical but I imagine that the wife or the person who organized the gofundme may not have a clue.

The goal is €50,000
But you're probably right, for a lot of people bitcoin and crypto is still very vague and unknown.
I imagine GoFundMe has, in some way, have to make sure they know where donations are coming from, so an anonymous currency doesn't really work out that well. Donation under €2,240 (per donor) are tax-exempted in The Netherlands, so as long as each individual donor stays under that amount, the receiver doesn't have to pay taxes. Over €2,240 it's 30% iirc.

@Turing, Do you knew hum personally? Condolence to his family.

I do not know him, probably because he was not that active again after August 2017. May his soul rest in peace.

Me neither, probably for the same reason but I felt a little sorry for him because he looked young. In the end, Bitcointalk is like life itself, with the only difference that we don't see each other's faces here.

I see the gofundme has exceeded the expected amount already, at least it will help the wife and kids a little with material issues. May he rest in peace.

Thank you.

Quoted from the article in "Noordhollands Dagblad":

Not sure where to post this, "serious discussion" seemed the most fit.

As stated in the second article, there's a "GoFundMe" started for his wife and kids.
Already 585 donations have been made and €18,315 has been raised.
