Yes, options are nice to have.  Uploading files directly would be easier on the end user, but would also require development time and potentially down the road could also lead to added costs.  I think there are better things that the Administration could spend their time on, but I'm certain that there are developers who would love to take on this task and possibly even figure out how to use IPFS so that bitcointalk doesn't have to handle all the responsibility.  I guess my question is, would you be willing to donate funds to help the development of these options, or is it just a nice thing to talk about?  How many weeks of your signature campaign money would you donate to help make this happen?  I'm guessing none, but what do I know?  Personally, I'd rather see the administration spend time fixing the politically manipulated disaster that the trust network has turned into.

You'd be surprised, all of this can be handled via a plugin. SMF has lots of third-party ones (trusted of course) and newer SMF versions have incorporated this.

Storage-wise, not really an issue. There are cloud solutions, NAS. Costs for them have decreased over the years. No need to rework the whole forum for that.

Also am pretty sure the forum isn't lacking in funds from the donations for the memberships and advertising fees over the years.

Not as nice as if everyone hosted their own files so that file storage was decentralized among the users
Or not as nice if everyone had both options. If I didn't want to use bitcointalk.org, I could use imgur.com, or my-ip.com etc., still, the images would be vulnerable to a central point of failure. On the other hand, it'd be more convenient to be able to upload your image from a bbcode button, without visiting a third party other than this forum.

I don't think you'll see a quick upload bottom at the moment, there might be something new in the next forum update or at least you have to ask for it.
I remember that the previous hack of the forum was caused by uploading the avatar image, which does not require a lot of memory capacity and has certain specifications.

In general, most members focus on written content and rarely resort to images, although they are an essential feature in many sites.

Do you also wish bitcointalk had a community wallet so we could all store our funds here for 24/7 access from anywhere without the need to download a wallet app?

Hmm no, wallets are convenient enough.

I'm pretty sure Og was being sarcastic with that question.  Wink

Wouldn't that be nice if images/gifs you used in your bitcointalk posts were cached by forum itself so if that particular file hoster were to go down, posts would still show right info instead of what is mentioned in title?

Not as nice as if everyone hosted their own files so that file storage was decentralized among the users instead of relying on someone else to come up with a solution that meets the needs of the users.

Sure, hosting your own files might be a pain in the ass, but so is safely storing your private keys.  Personally, I'd like to see people move away from this attitude that someone else needs to provide them something and instead start leading by example.  You want a better image sharing service, create one.  There's something to be said for people who step up to do things instead of complain about others who do things.

Storage costs and liability issues make that very unlikely I think.
I don't think storage cost matters much. It's all about liability.

There are sites that scrape what users have written here too and those archives will include the images the user has shared.

(eg archive.org used the scrape the forum's pages quite often).

You should use a host that isn't going to disappear soon (imgur has been around since forever and still works I think) and archive the really important posts.
