The S4 I ran I think at 1.3THs, no idea if its under 60dB. But the PSU was making the most noise.

Depending on ambient you can run it at maybe 1.5-1.6THs and its moderately loud but any higher and it just gets too loud or heats up.

I think it was using 0.6W/GHS or 0.65W/GHS at those speeds. So almost like an S5.

S4 does have a server like psu so I don't think of it as quiet but it's been a while since I had one running in my mining area.  If going back that far the Avalon 4.1's you could almost make silent and ofcourse can use a quiet ATX psu.   S3's are a option on running quiet but are kinda dated.

I think you might look at way's to dampen sound with S7.  It's price is just hard to beat currently but it with PSU is loud.  So you would have to make a enclosure for it like some have done.   But I don't know if then it will be quiet enough for you.

Are these your operations? Hearing "if someone were to peek in on the rack they wouldn't be alarmed by the crazy looking wires and bricks on the bottom or the rack" worries me a bit.  If it's someone elses keep in mind some regular data centers will not take BTC asics due to heat + sound.

These are my operations that are running in full service professional office space that my company leases (I am one of the owners).  In the IT closet of this office the rack is very organized with (4) 30 amp circuits of 208v feeding the IT equipment.  I am trying to accomodate my employees by not placing a jet engine in the closet.  There is also some language in the lease regarding power hungry equipment that is very vague and I want to make sure I can argue that all of my equipment pulling power on the rack is for professional use and not subject to additional fees.  Making that argument while looking at (4) S4's on the rack is easier than having (3) S7's howling away with PCIe wires everywhere.

Most of us used flex duct from Home Depot or lowes.

Leave the fan alone.

I get it now..put the miner inside the duct, not attach it to the back...I can't pull this off for the rack install but I could make it work if I were to put a farm together and had the space.  I have been playing quite a bit with the Fan % and Freq that you talked about in other posts and the fan at 30% creates much LESS noise that than at 100%.  I have somewhat settled into 504 at 35% (64 dBs), temps at 66 55 61 without any ventilation or supplemental AC, but with a dissapointing 3309 GH/s.

I made the S4 very quiet by underclocking, undervolting, swapping in S3 fans, and modifiying the fan controller script.
It was very quiet but still loud because of the stock PSU noise which I couldn't make quiet.

I think I am going to take a dive into this and buy one (S4) to mod and test out.  How was the heat exhaust on it, did you vent it outside?  For ventilation I was going to run a single dryer vent tube from the ceiling to the floor, add a y connector and 2 dryer vent tubes to the back of the fans.  I have enough room to add (4) S4's to the rack, do you think I could keep them all under 60 dBs?

With the custom firware to undervolt and severely underclock, if you replace the fans...

I'd do it with S5's instead. They're so cheap, now.

S3 was easy, just undervolt and it will run at 420GHS/300Watts and swapped in the old KNC Jupiter 12cm case fans.

No idea how to make S7 quiet since unlike the S3 which exhausts 300Watts, it needs to exhaust 4 times the same amount of heat.

For this particular S7 that I am trying to dampen the dBs, it is for an installation on my server rack that is in one of my offices, so it cannot be too obtrusive (or any louder than some servers on a rack).  I have some space and power capacity that is a sunk cost, so noise level is the driving factor for this installation.  I have about 1/6 of the rack to work with and the ability to vent the miner(s) through the ceiling tile. 

Not having too much faith in being able to do this with the louder S7, I am open to exploring other options such as:

- (3) S5's with silent fans
- (1) S4 with silent fans
- ?

If you can find them Avalon 4.1's were about as quiet as it gets.   Some of the other's you might be able to underclock.   I still consider the S5 as kinda hot and loud.  S3 was a decent amount quieter.

I had some spare plastic boards, so i just put S7 and PSU on a cart, then put 3-4 boards around at variable angles, including one in the back covering the more loud input fan.
The idea was that sound waves will reflect off boards and if i put the boards at correct angles, there will be less noise coming out.
In fact, i got reduction to 65 dB (from high 70ies) at 1-2 ft from the cart with miner while tweaking this "system" , which was OK for my family to tolerate it for 2-3 weeks before I shipped them to hosting. Lo tech, but it worked.

In regards to attaching the the duct, I was looking at the 3D printed ones on eBay, like this one:

Most just do the pull on the back.  OP is wanting to psu to be reduced to though, so he might need to look into more of a box built to reduce sound.   As one duct for miner wont have PSU in it.   

I would agree with phil on don't mess with fan's changing them out.  In most cases with summer coming or here for some changing to lower RPM fans might not be the best of ideas.

But take note that the output need to be pushed strait outside the room, you need a fan pulling air in and for hot miners like the S7 batches i got, this does suppress noise by a lot, but a S7 at full blast is still very loud through such box.

This worked splendid for S5's and okay for Avalon during cooler periods. But the TDP of the S7 and still for the A6, is just too dense.

I have been reading quite a bit about replacing the fans on the S3/S5 with success to reduce the dBs, has anyone done this with the S7?  If so, are there any recommendations on fans and realized stats that you would be willing to share?  I would assume the 1 fan batch vs 2 fan batch would be much quieter, is this correct?  How about if I am also looking at using ductwork to vent the heat on the S7, would it be more beneficial to have the 2 fan unit to help move the air outside?  Regarding the ducts, would an insulated duct help reduce dBs or just use plain dryer duct?  To round out the dB reduction trifecta, is there a particular PSU that is more silent that the others, or mods to a particular PSU that would help reduce dBs?

Sorry for the ramble of questions, this is my first post here and I am drinking from the firehose.  Grin
