Check if your hubs are powered. I run 12 U2s on Bitminter at 2.4ghs each, and it works fine.
Are you using POWERED USB hubs?
be sure you check that there is enough power for your mining machine

What OS are you using? WinXP tops out at around 12, WinVista tops out at 50, Win7 60. I don't think *nix has a limit.

first off you may want to ask the bitminter thread. I used to be able to do a lot more then 8 sticks.
but usb block erupters are really old gear

I can tell you a few thing about usb sticks. You need good hubs. with good hubs you should be able to do a lot more then 8 sticks.
