I wouldn't mind if it is an open standard, but if it is only bitpay, I could find a company that doesn't use bitpay and instead accepts payments directly.

Well, It depends on the services you're trying to use. If you want to buy games, you could use G2A as they use Bitbay or maybe Bitrefill to buy a gift card for whatever service you are dealing with.

Although I also find it counter intuitive, I did such payment this year (somewhere in the spring) with Electrum. I just pasted that "address" into Electrum as address and it "knew" what to do.
I guess that people are reluctant to this until they get their first such payment through...

Yeah, a lot of people (like me) found it annoying but judging from the sheer number of people who keep posting in support and on this forums of "wrong address" or "wrong amount", I would say it's a small inconvenience and Bip70 does have that really useful purpose for normal retail merchant use. Getting a refund was relatively straightforward with Bitpay invoice (though always make sure you know the exact merchant) and they crazily didn't accept refunds to native Segwit when I asked only in August.

They're not the only ones too. MisterTango that I've used also gives bip70 invoice.

As figment says, just use Electrum, smoothest wallet experience with Bitpay et al. If you really want to extract the send to address, here's an open source tool. https://decoder.bip70.org/

What's up with Bitpay?  Instead of showing me an address it shows me bitcoin:?r= followed by the URL.  WTF.  I know they should start with 1, 3, or bc.

Is this some other payment method that my wallets don't understand?  Which do?

I may end up using my credit card.   Angry

near the beginning of this year, they started requiring people to use the BIP-70 payment protocol. since it locks in the correct sending amount and bitcoin address, they argue that it reduces costly user payment errors.

here's a list of compatible wallets (not comprehensive)

i use electrum---it's very easy. just paste the URL into the address field in the send tab and it fills everything in for you.

If you don't want to use any compatible wallet with their invoice you could use this it's a site that shows the BTC address for any bitpay invoice. I've been using it for months and it always does the job for me.

They started doing that about 6 months ago for me. If you use a bitpay wallet to load your card, it accepts that kind of address. All you have to do is send money to your bitpay wallet, link your card to that wallet, load your card.
