same with my understanding you can only use bitcoin to buy alts and not ltc you need to sell that and exchange it fro btc before doing a trade unlike with
nova which you can use ltc to trade since they have ltc market.

It does have altcoin to altcoin pairs.

For example, there are Ethereum and USDT markets on bittrex. You essentially are selling whatever altcoin that you have directly to Ethereum/USDT(both altcoins themselves, and in the process you are pretty much avoiding a ton of fees.

however a thing to consider is that there are very few pairs when doing alt to alt. Also, the market spread may be higher since there is a lesser amount of traders actively trading on these pairs.

Yep, Bittrex has only BTC/Altcoins pairs, It hasn't Altcoins/Altcoins pairs, which is something I don't understand at all why not, So as Erikalui said, you need to play with Bitcoin each time (convert to BTC and then use BTC t buy an Altcoin)

You can buy and sell any altcoins with bitcoins. Just place an order on the market page of that altcoin (like in your case https://bittrex.com/Market/Index?MarketName=BTC-LTC) and then place a buy order according to the market rate or your rate. You first need to have bitcoins in your account balance.

Does Bittrex only allow buying other altcoins with BTC?

I have some LTC there but i can't figure out if I can buy other coin.
