I bought one back in June and still have it hashing on one of my scrypt rigs.
May not pay out much but the scrypt rig is running anyway so why not.

Absolutely, just configure cgminer to point to any other SHA256 currency pool, look here https://cryptocointalk.com/forum/179-sha-256-cryptocoins/

The difficulty is lower (compared to BTC) so you can mine more of them.  Although kind of worthless, you can trade them into BTC, or just hold on and wait to see if they rise in value.  I have 5 USB erupters going on an alt coin making about 40/day just in case they rise later, won't hurt to have a stockpile!

a newbie question - can you use any of the existing block eruptors, asics etc. on similar coins like BTC that use the sha-256 hashing algorithm ...? jsut thinking that if some of them get outdated for BTC, could they still be good for others?

Hi,

I still use 2 eruptors on a Slush pool and actual reward is between 2000 - 2500 satoshis per block.
check pool stats how often a block was found, and do the math.

Pool stats: http://mining.bitcoin.cz/stats/

MPO: 30$ is too much - not worth it

That depends on the rise in difficulty and price rise,The issue with most of the ASIC's that they can't be used for anything except Bitcoins and few other similar networks and not wide range like less powerful equipments.

$30 for the lot - according to some calculators I'll make $300~ a year running these, is that an accurate representation of what might happen?
No, it's not.

Being optimistic you'll make something like 0.075BTC, ever.

At current BTC-rates that's around $60, so $30 for the lot isn't that bad.

IF the BTC-rate doesn't drop in the future and
IF the optimistic future-difficulty assumption is correct
you might make some profit.

Here's the current bitcoin difficulty: http://blockexplorer.com/q/getdifficulty.

Average BTC per Day = (megahashes per second / difficulty) * 502.91419

for you:

502.91419  * 3300 / 1418481395  = 0.00117 BTC/day = $1 / day. They'll probably pay for themselves in two months with difficulty increasing.

$30 each is a lot. When you're about to get 10 of those, you pay $300 (for 3.3GH/s...). I'd rather pay $600 and get a 30GH/s miner. Like the ASICMiner Block Eruptor Cube, which you can also overclock to 38GH/s.

If you're not interested into earning money with Bitcoin and your computer runs a lot anyway, just buy some of those 330MH/s and plug them in the back of your PC and let it mine. Then you atleast get something.

$30 each, or $30 for all 10?

The latter would be an ok-price,
$30 each wouldn't be profitable at all, even if you don't pay for electricity.

A friend has offered me 10 330Mh/s block eruptors for $30, would that be profitable at all? I don't really have to pay for electricity, so I guess that helps a bit

Since you needn't pay for leccy, you can have fun with them at this price. Once bored, you can always use them as key rings or whatever.

I have three of them that I have not used in months. The difficulty went up so high so quickly. Bitcoin especially. PPC and TRC were mineable for a while. I actually was getting 20 to 25 ppc per day at one point. It was not worth the effort then at those prices, but it is now.
So, if you want to try mining as a hobby, go for it.
