In the future people would probably run thin clients, with only a few running the whole blockchain. But I think blockchain trimming is coming soon?

Again yes, the chain will grow. So will your storage and processing power. Moore's law.

Having said all that, your experience with the fresh start is rather ugly, and really not acceptable. What version of client are you using? Is it possible that the system (or client data) got corrupt, and client is stuck? Is it possible that your connection is worse than just "wonky"?

I remember testing the current version pre-release on an ancient 0.7GB laptop - it took ~10 hours to download and verify the complete blockchain. You've been stuck for days. Something is not right.

I'm running Ufasoft on a 1.6Ghz Eee PC. I suspect the the 54 Mbit wireless connect is part of the slowness along with a 5400 rpm harddrive. also, i'm having router/cable modem problems where the net connection just drops, usually while i'm sleeping. I've got another 285 days of data left to go through. It will take a few more days.

You are running Ufasoft miner? Not the bitcoin client of some kind? Or you are trying to run both?
Nevermind. I just learned that Ufasoft miner is now also a client. Perhaps it sucks? Perhaps it needs to download chains for ALL the altcoins it supports?

There are lightweight clients that do not need the whole blockchain.  I've not used them myself, but if you search google you'll soon find something.

If you are interested in lightweight wallets, look into:

Electrum
MultiBit

Well, it would be a hard fork, so it would need everyone to update the client

that seems like a resonable solution. I'm not sure who gets to decide when and how it gets done, how it gets implimented, but i hope they don't wait for it to become a real problem.

in the mean time, my little netbook will just keep chugging along.  Smiley

Yes, the chain will grow. There are some plans on how to prune it, for example there is no need to keep every transaction, just the last one for every address is enough. If i transfer bitcoins from A to B and them from B to C, no need to keep the first one.

I created a wallet on a netbook that is only connected to the net wirelessly. I've been watching it crunch through, i guess it is the blockchain data, for days. it has been partially hampered by a wonky internet connection also, but it is still taking awhile. I'm not concerned about the time it is taking, except...

This got me thinking, these chains do nothing but grow? for as long as bitcoins are used as tender? every transaction is put in a new block in the chain?

Am i the only one who sees a problem with this? over years the chain will become so long that it will take months, or years, for a new wallet to sync up. not to mention the amount of disk space that will be needed to store the chain.

Is there something that i'm not seeing? someway to trim the size of the chain?  Huh
