I am very sorry about this horrible situation.

Do people in affected areas fight back? Do they rebel? What are they doing to eradicate this plague?

The Dalailama has recently said people from countries affected by ISIS will eventually have to help rebuild their countries.

Is there awareness among the natives that they have to fight back?

And what else we can expect from these bastards.
Islam is the religion of peace.  But they can not afford to see the religion other than Islam.  They will fight ; kill the persons who do not believe in Islam.  We witness their terror in the entire world.
But interestingly if there is no other religion to fight with; they will fight among each other.  They will start killing each other.  There are different sects like Shia Sunni Ahamadia and many more.  Sunnis will kill shias and Shias will kill Sunnis.
So bloodshed is the essence of this religion.  Even Allah feels happiness when millions of animals are slaughtered on Eid.

They have attacked people even moslem in Nigeria. Previously, they have stated to support and pledge allegiance to ISIS

Two of the most affected provinces (Yobe and Borno) are more than 90% Muslim. But most of their previous attacks had targeted the local Christians. A large part of the schoolgirls kidnapped in Chibok were Christian. Now very few Christians remain in these two provinces, as they have migrated towards the other provinces.
don't just understand what the Christians did wrong. Take the case of Leah Sharibuas an example, just because she refuse to get converted to a Muslim she has been in captivity for over eight months. And the terror group have threatened to kill her or enslave her for life. May God have mercy on her soul.
The current President was very much vocal about the incompetence of the former president in solving the Boko Haram crisis but he has also been in power for more than three years and he hasn’t brought about any meaningful solution to the crisis as well, The Nigerians are very much capable of riding their land of this problem but albeit corruption is their problem.

Are these so-called "Muslim" and "Christian" factions also unique tribal cultures? In other words, is this a new thing, or a continuation of a thousand years of hate?

Yeah it is always hard to being minority in a country, especially in religious country. They always get unfair policy by the government with the authorities, and become the target of rebels.

Hmm... seems that even the mercenaries from South Africa, Russia and Ukraine are not being able to stop the Boko Haram genocide. A few weeks ago, the Boko Haram was on the run, and many of the villages which were previously under the control of the terrorist group was recaptured by the government troops. But the latest incident just shows that all that advantage is lost.

Kano (Nigeria) (AFP) - Boko Haram carried out a fresh wave of massacres in northeastern Nigeria on Friday, locals said, killing nearly 200 people in 48 hours of violence President Muhammadu Buhari blasted as "inhuman and barbaric".

The militants have staged multiple attacks across restive Borno state since Wednesday, gunning down worshippers at evening Ramadan prayers, shooting women in their homes, and dragging men from their beds in the dead of night.

A young female suicide bomber also killed 12 worshippers when she blew herself up in a mosque in Borno.

Such a great world we live in nowadays.
