the screen just doesn't turn on
Not even an error message, eg, "Operating system not found"? You've got a major hardware failure, and a repair disk won't help.

Glad I got backup devices\computers. Looks like I won't be getting another laptop until the far future. Laptops should be leet af by then

what laptop is it? maybe i could buy it off you.

do you mean a bootable recovery disc? you shouldn't have to buy.. you could download the OEM version from a bit torrent site, which is legal.. and just install windows (it will use the key embedded into your computer).

try pressing "del" as well. i have an asus and that's the key required to enter the bios.

My laptop prompts me to press F12 to go into "setup" when it boots up
(yours will be a different key)

In the setup menu, you should find something along the lines of "boot priority" or "enable/disable"
Make sure you have your CD/DVD drive booting enabled and it's priority above internal hard disk

pressing f8 or f12 doesn't work. the screen just doesn't turn on

Have you configured your laptop to allow boot from CD/DVD?
or boot CD/DVD before booting from internal hard disk?
