If you plan to develop, install Git and have a good version control from the start.

Also go to Linux, I prefer Debian or Debian-based clones(ex: Linux Mint Debian version)

Stay away from Ubuntu, for long it a crappy OS

First Linux because programming on Windows is really disseminating and causes depression.
Others will depend on what you would like to develop. Eclipse is nice, if there a version for your language, but it consumes too much memory.

Some random programs you might would like:

djvu viewer - far better than adobe pdf, also saves where you stopped your reading. No need for that if you go to linux.
VLC player
Tor browser.

Haw You tried games? If your job doesn't require your use PC in home, then the other reason to buy a new computer are the games. Personally I think it's a waste of money if you buy a new pc every 3 or 4 years but don't play games on it.

Their are two that i wants to recommend. I use them all the time.  Smiley

1. f.lux : It adjusts a computer display's color temperature according to its location and time of day, based on a user specified set of longitude and latitude geographical coordinates, a ZIP Code, or a city name.

2. puush : Use keyboard shortcuts or drag-drop gestures to quickly capture any portion of your screen. These screenshots are near-instantly puush'd, leaving behind a short URL in your clipboard, perfect for sharing. Paste these easily into your Twitter, IRC or IM clients. Share them with the world or make them private, for your eyes only.

Firefox

All free. Oh, and you might want to get double the amount of RAM at the very least.

You will need antivir no matter what. I recommend Avast! great all-around protection against viruses and trojans.
Nice options here are also AntiVir Free version - lightweight and solid. Good ratings. Worth looking into.

Firewall is nice security option too: Comodo Firewall - long been considered one of the best free firewall tools available.

Peer Block - Control/block your PC's communication with ad or spyware servers. Secures P2P activities.

This really depends on what you usually do with your computer? Installing anything that you won't use would be a mistake.
I actually separated a few systems for different groups of programs.

If you're a developer don't forget
fileseek @ http://www.fileseek.ca/ - the free version is very good ... and fast.
don't recall anyone telling you to get openoffice @ http://www.openoffice.org/ / libreoffice @ https://www.libreoffice.org/ if you don't already have a fully paid m$ office.

Just be careful and don't download any software claiming they'll make your computer faster / cleaner etc ( exception CCleaner ).
You could also look to download Driver Booster to get all the latest drivers. It beats all other driver programs because it's free, and doesn't only scan your computer, but downloads and installs for you as well. Just keep an eye open while installing it to uncheck the box that installs toolbars and changes your default browser. It's all optional, but the box is checked by default.

Which anti-Virus software are you planning to use? I'd recommend Kaspersky Internet Security 2014, which you could get from the Ebay for as little as $10. Very inexpensive, at the time efficient also.

Paint is indeed very useful for painting beautiful squares and circles, but it's already installed from scratch with windows computers, no need to download it. Smiley

Upgrade to Paint.net

I prefer Paintbrush (mac user) Huehuehuehue.

Why use paint when there is lightyears ahead photoshop?
Photoshop <<<<< MSPaint, and this is from experience, not because of functionalities but rather what the average will used for, which cut, past, add text, cover/hide something and that's all

When you can afford it, throw away that spinning hard drive and get yourself a solid state drive. If you are doing HTML and web server stuff, definitely set up a LAMP server and connect to it via putty or winscp. GIMP is a good alternative to photoshop or paint. Notepad++ is useful too. Good luck!

You don't need such thing, just install CCCP which is a codec pack and use your windows player no need for more plays on your PC btw isn't MS Paint stock on windows <.< ?

yeah but useful one  Grin but VLC is VLC , i prefer VLC more than any other Video Player.

the only good thing about VLC is the ease of use as a reception streaming platform that's all to it, but you would be just adding ruddency to your computer for no reason, why you want to have 3 or 4 video players if you are just going to use one and rarely

My only suggestion is to not load it with crapware and unecessary software, one or two internet browsers at most (firefox or Chrome IE9 and tor on a drive), 1 antivirus with firewall (even the windows security essentials is enough for this), 1 antimalware and privacy software(malawarebyte, hitmanPRO,Spybot search and destroy) your codecs I recommend CCCP, and your SQL PHP software, notepad++ Java and you should be set to go

I highly recommend Malwarebytes.
Malwarebytes Anti malware is really good indeed, even the free version. It doesn't ask you to purchase every damn time you use it either like other free programs. Also free version isn't time limited, only the premium trial is.

I just bought the Acer Aspire One netbook. Link I also plan on upgrading it to 4gigs of ram.

If it is a netbook, i doubt you can install any database system and have it running smoothly. Just try the free mysql first, or use ms access to familiarise yourself with sql. If you have a desktop with a bit more muscle, install mysql on there and query the database on your netbook.
