Thanks for your replies. The conclusion is that it's just at the border where it theoretically makes sense to mine, but then it's really not worth the trouble.

It's perplexing that a new computer which is virtually for free can't mine anymore. I wonder if it is possible to create a coin which will always be mineable on standard hardware such as CPUs.

Seen from a few people of their 780 getting 600+ KH/s with latest cudaMiner so I would expect the 780m to hash at the speed of a 270. As for CPU, I heard that a 4770k can make 0.1BTC per month mining MemoryCoin so together, you can make $100+ per month.

Not worth the risk. At today's rate you will get around $1 dollar a day. Not considering the power cost, that would eat almost all of it as this high end notebook shall use at least 200 watts. Its 4,8 KWh, on a 0,2 rate, its $0,96 of energy cost per day.

a 780m has a 248 kh/s rate
(i used 200 watts as an example)

Don't mine on such an expensive high-end laptop, except a few minutes at time for experimenting and learning.

Fighting Liquid with Liquid
CPU: i7-4700MQ max 3.4GHz, quadcore
RAM: 16GB
GFX: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M, 4 GB Memory

I don't know much about the M version of the card but the non-M versions run ~430kh/s or so, up to you to decide if thats worth you time though...

I wouldnt. It will just kill your computer faster and you risk frying the motherboard or screwing up something else on your new computer.  You are better off buying an Antminer to play around with  Grin

Hi Guys,

I just bought a pc with these specs:
CPU: i7-4700MQ max 3.4GHz, quadcore
RAM: 16GB
GFX: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M, 4 GB Memory

I understand it doesn't make sense to use non-ASIC technology for BTC mining.
But does it make sense to use it for mining any altcoins?

I bought this computer for my personal use anyways, so if I can mine a few coins, even if it's just for fun, then I would be happy to do it.
