This is the harsh reality in ICO's. Your hard work will turn to nothing and will add to important lesson in your life to choose correct bounty from the start.

If a project fails its ICO targets and withdraws, how does it pay token bounty?

You will not get anything , because there is nothing to get. Thats why you should do your research before joining and even after that you should keep an eye on the project, what is the raised amount, what are the new and more.

well they could just simply pay you the token, but that token would be worthless Tongue
when they do ICO, they just created their own tokens and sold them in ICO stage cheaply
ICO tokens (on a platform) can be seen similar to pre-mined coin (has its own chain)
that's the reason why so many ICO tokens turned scam, same as coin developer who hid pre-mined coins
If failed, the honest ICO would just returned the fund to investors, the scam one would just run away  Grin
I recommend find one, ICO bounty, that pays weekly in bitcoin/etherium or other prominent crypto

if a project fails then you not going to receive anything . Thats why alot of project pays with their tokens because they dont know if the project will be a success or fails

This is correct. Which is why it is so much nicer to create an ICO, the enter market is very cheap.

Project pays in tokens because then they no need initial capital for marketing. It is kich cheaper to start ICO
