The most likely reason is that your electrum wallet is not connected. Another reason could be that the transaction isn't broadcasted yet. What is the transaction id?
Close your electrum wallet and ropen it, choose manually an electrum server.

OP, can you also take a screenshot of the bottom of the electrum window, does it say you are not connected, it is syncronising or does it display a balance i.e 0.00000000 atm.
How do i get it to show up there?
It should show up on it's own. Can you check the txid (enter it on the search field on blockchain.info) and see if it's really sent to your own address?
I have requested some bitcoin from my friend and gave him the adress that is displayed in the "receive" tab in the electrum client.
After he sent them, I made a request for that amount in electrum and it is apparently "paid", as you may see below.

However, it does not show up in my history as an incoming payment. How do i get it to show up there?
