Better to mine LTC for the beggining and when you see how its to mine, then you will think another ways like ASIC mining 
I think for now, litecoin is easier for the average Joe to mine, but it's up to you OP .. 
As above, GPUs are good for the scrypt based coins like LTC. You can always trade for either after you've mined
Mine LTC. BTC is way ot of league after the advent of monstrous ASIC MINERS
You better mine LTC, or mabye some other profitable coin. Maybe Doge coin or something like that and than you sell it for BTC or LTC
LTC for GPU mining.
