So I guess asking for suggestions of what to look for is out of the question?

if you never done p2p loaning I would recommend you read about it first, and read up about how to spot a scammer they are not hard, but there is a lot to consider when spotting people that could run off with your coins. Just do your homework and you be fine for the most part.

I joined BTCJam recently because I figured once my mining equipment came in I might do some lending as a way to earn a little extra. 

What has been your experience with BTCJam both from a lending and borrowing side?
