So you basically mostly/usually have to just trust they sent you the amount they claimed they did?

Depends on the use case?
It's a token on Ethereum, so there should be no issues with simply sending the Ethereum around between the parties.
In short, the idea is that you can lose your Ethereum transactions trace by using the Buccaneer protocol.
So people can just send you the ETH and you will know the ETH balance. Then you can privatize the ETH which you received if you really need to (or buy the tokens yourself with received ETH if that's the end goal).

Hmm sounds like maybe some user-interface work could help at least if in principle there is some workaround with doing transactions thus maybe potentially weakening privacy.

Some send privacy that includes proof of how much was really sent, legible only to recipient maybe or somesuch.

It doesn't seem to mention how you know, when someone claims to send you X BUCC, how much BUCC you actually received?

In case they sent you tokens using the dapp (the private way), there are "Decrypt" and "Partial Decrypt" functions in the dapp (note this will issue a transaction) under Tortuga which reveal your balance.
Running Decrypt will deanonymize any private balance you have (so only run it if you don’t remember/know what balance you have).
Partial Decrypt will deanonymize any smaller balance you input that is smaller than your total private balance.

Otherwise they can still send you tokens the usual (non-private) way via wallet (e.g. Metamask), then you would see that balance normally.

Two out of three so far of those links lead to blank pages, one all black the other all white

Hey, thanks for checking it out.
Dev announced yesterday that he will be updating the dapp, so maybe that's causing temporary hiccups. Today, dapp takes a while to load for me as well, but it does load eventually if you let it.
Otherwise everything should be working.

Two out of three so far of those links lead to blank pages, one all black the other all white, using Firefox on Ubuntu here on laptop and having already just rebooted due to browser having locked up machine already on last browsing session.

Sites nowadays offload so much work onto browser machines that are much larger and faster than those that used to easily allow a few pages of tabs 30-50 tabs of wikipedia pages due to wikis referencing other pages so often when researching etc, that despite higher and higher end machines browsing keeps getting far too much load no matter how advanced the machine.

I doubt whatever code that all black page and all white page are trying to perform on my browser is helping that situation any.

Finally now after typing all that at least the links tree page displays.

Buccaneer V3 (BUCC) is Ethereum's first and only on-chain, smart contract-based, fully decentralized privacy currency.
The final component has been completed recently:

Token is shielded by Ethereum's network - features being composed only using smart-contracts makes it impossible to take down.

Enjoy.
