I don't think this belongs in custom hardware but just hardware as custom hardware is not GPUs and CPUs but FGPAs and ASICs

Ah my bad, i thought Custom Hardware would involve home-made rigs.

The CPU needs to feed the GPU, handle comms (to/from pools), etc.. so to an extent - yes.  Pretty marginal, though - any modern CPU is 'good enough' if not overkill.  If you're going to mine altcoins, you might also check out whether there's a CPU portion involved, still.. that would have a greater impact, but not nearly as much as your choice of GPU.

Alright, thanks.

It doesn't even belong in bitcoin mining hardware since no one mines bitcoin with commodity hardware any more, but unless the OP makes it clear what he's planning on using it for, he gets the benefit of the doubt.

I have a few MB and Sempron combos if you are interested...

People run dozens of BTC ASICs on a rPi, which has a single core ARM cpu. Our GPUs rigs use a single core Sempron, and it's idle most of the time.

Basically, find the cheapest CPU you can find.

Hi, I'm planning on building a GPU mining rig (yes i know you don't mine BTC with GPU's anymore).

Is the CPU choice important (will slower CPU's limit the GPU's so they don't work with their full potential)?
