Altcoins and bitcoin is not the only option you could follow. You could definitely go for a better or at least less riskier option with stocks or gold or real estate so that you could know what you are doing is still not as risky as losing all of your money. Bitcoin once dropped 80% in price from $20k to $3k, you wouldn't want that to happen again for your portfolio.

However, if you are strictly crypto person I would say just simply divide them equally, go buy 50% bitcoin and 50% altcoin, buy top altcoins with your 50% and with the last 10% of that 50% you should buy risky stuff and gamble on what you want to do. That is the most logical and most suggested method for everyone that has been said millions of times so far. Never go full bitcoin or full altcoin.

I would like to play with altcoins too. If you only buy and hold the bitcoin then you will feel what great things you missed! There are many potential altcoins in the market! Even many altcoins can give you profit than Bitcoin. That's why my strategy is to buy bitcoin by 60% of your total money and other 40% split into various good altcoins!
shortcomings withholding altcoin are happening right now. it can make you have fewer assets. in bitcoin pairs, sometimes the price of an altcoin is rapidly decreasing, like now. however, if you stick to it, it might make your assets grow more. so when the price of a bitcoin pump, I think the price of altcoin also will not be silent and will rise. it makes you get a greater profit than when you hold bitcoin.

When we are investing in altcoin here is a huge chance of risk compared to Bitcoin, that's why everybody suggests us to invest in Bitcoin instead of altcoins. People who invested 1000$ when the price of Bitcoin was around 3200$, now their profit will be around 7200$.

How did you calculate that?
Bitcoin made x3 from that level. So the net profit is $ 2,000 (a little more but not important).
Perhaps you mixed something up when switching from natural numbers to percentages and vice versa.
Maybe she's sleepy, if calculated indeed net profit earned about $2000, because that invested only $1000, maybe you want to say $10000? Obviously if you invest $10000, you can now have a profit of $7000 more

I think this is not a typo, namely a mistake. The person who invested $ 10,000 in bitcoin at a price of $ 3200 now has a net profit of about 20,000. This is very different from 7,000.
But in any case, individual segments are not proof of anything. For comparison, we need to take more extensive statistical indicators.

I prefer BTC, cause Altcoin market is depended on the price of bitcoin.
Current Bitcoin market is on a bull flag and it is sure price will not fall before next halving,
so it is better to hold Bitcoin for a long time, I think it will not disappoint us.
But don’t forget mate because alt coins can grow more than what bitcoin can give in a short period of time so still diversification is the best way to handle our investments here

Yes, Altcoins may able to grow more but trading alt coin is really painful and anxious. The future of Altcoin is uncertain. Bitcoin is better if you want to do risk free trading.

There is no risk free trading, however. Also, Bitcoin is used most as a speculative investment with its own high risk and high volatility.

The thread title is apt.

Bitcoin is an investment.

Altcoins are gambling.

However, that was not the question on the poll.

In anycase, it appears many of everyone who replied will not pass the bitcoin maximalist purity test hehehe.

I think that bitcoin is going to make more gains than altcoins. Despite that it cost more to buy one bitcoin but altcoins can be cheap and most of them get dumped back. Bitcoin investment seem to be a better one than many investment in altcoins.

Obviously Bitcoin can make good and lesser risk returns than any other alts in the market. The only thing that hinders most of the investors to put all their money on BTC, is because Bitcoin is way too far expensive than all of the alts in the market. Investing in alts isn't that bad, but the risks level is higher than Bitcoin's.

For me, I think Bitcoin will always be leading.
From my perceptive, I feel that altcoins won't do much if the price of Bitcoin remains stagnant. In most case for an altcoin to break a price barrel, there will be a rise in the price of Bitcoin.
There I suggest anyone who is buying or investing in any altcoins should at least invest in some Satoshi. Its a safer alternative.
There is no doubt that bitcoin must be on the top of list because no coins that can assure as profit specially if we can Keep it for a long time.

Altcoin casino? I guess you are comparing investment with gambling. You shouldn't though. You have far more control on your investment money compared to gambling money.
Anyway, if you want to make steady and slow profit with less risk to carry, then yeah, just invest on bitcoin and keep holding it. But, if you are looking for some quick profit (and also quick losses!), then invest on altcoins. Remember, you will be risk level will be very high and chances are you will be losing you investment within few days.

But if you look at the events of the last week, then it is obvious that if crypto as a whole grows, then the main altcoin (ETH) grows faster than bitcoin. If we expect the start of a large bull market, then it is best to invest in ETH and some other altcoins.

Altcoins are a gamble, you're right about that. The best part about it is that they do not go up and down, some of them go only down with small insignificant pumps along the way and the whole altcoin community is trying to catch those pumps and sell with a profit. That's why you mostly lose with alts. Bitcoiners aim at long term investment and holding while altcoiners treat their coins like shit and really want to be in fiat or BTC and are greedy.
I say buy BTC.

If for example in a few years, 5btc becomes worth 1 eth them you'll still have 1 eth from now...
I am not seeing a situation like this even in the distant future.

A lot of this depends on how much risk you're willing to take and also how likely you think bitcoin is to come out on top over the years (not just in 2020).
If you invest in BTCitcoin well before the fork then you have already taken the risk to invest in the long run which means you hold major forks and if that is the case there is nothing to worry and despite saying that only BTCitcoin will come out on top rather than any other alt coin in the market.

Were dealing with a very volatile market. Eth has overtaken bitcoin in price according to coinbase in the past (I thik it was coinbase anyway).

The point being: what if another, much better currency comes out that can threaten the post of bitcoin. Bitcoin is high in price because its secure and well known, if another currency can do both of those but be more user friendly the there's a chance it can take over.

Some forks won't be held by you such as newly created coins, I doubt a chain split would cause much competition in the network yet at least...

Investing all money in one coin is not a good idea, altcoins are not useless, Bitcoin needs altcoins too. So, if you really support the crypto idea, you should appreciate good potential altcoins too. Look at the altcoins market now, most of the coins are getting a green signal and increasing in price. So, I would diversify my investment in various altcoins too.
That only be good if you choose the right/potential altcoins but if you are investing those altcoins that don't have market volume, you'll just losing your money. Bitcoin remains unbeatable in the market in terms of profit gaining, altcoins will only be profitable if the market grows just like today. If you are planning to diversify your portfolio more into altcoins, you better have to begin it now before it will skyrocket.

In fact, I'm looking for that also but I'm not going to buy those on the top altcoins instead of considering in the bottom that has already been performing well in previous years coz this there is a big chance that it moves high back again as it did before.

A simple poll to know if every person in this speculation subforum has a similar attitude in trading and investment as they had on 2016 and 2017.

The bullish sentiment is back, and traders have been placing their allocations on their favorite blockchain projects. The question on most investor’s minds is which coin will have the biggest payoff? Is it Bitcoin, the largest coin by market cap, or smaller cap Altcoins?

Read in full https://bitcoinist.com/bitcoin-vs-altcoins-which-will-make-you-more-money-in-2020/

Nothing new has happened in this area - bitcoin is a more reliable investment, but less profitable in a growing market. Altcoins are a more risky investment, but also more profitable in a growing market.
In fact, if you believe in growth, but want to make a reliable investment, you can invest part of the funds in bitcoin, and part in altcoins.

it's true that investing in bitcoin is a sure thing, and quite good compared to investing in altcoin, it's just not for the top altcoin. the current development of the price of an altcoin is also quite good, I currently hold more ethereum than bitcoin. if you hold 0.1 bitcoin, then it can only be 0.1 bitcoin, whereas when you hold 0.1 bitcoin in the form of altcoin, it is likely that the amount can increase at this time. ethereum is one example of altcoin rising today.

I would say for profit purposes, altcoin(s) will win but the question is, can you guess which altcoin will have the massive gains? In 2017 ripple had the most amazing rise, from 0.006$ it went up to 3$. But we have to agree with that almost all altcoin follows to bitcoin's price movement and this means bitcoin is leader.
High risk = high reward. If you are a person who likes doing a lot of research and taking high risks, then personally I would stick altcoins. I have no idea why some people ignore altcoins because there is very high profit potential in them, not only profit but some of them are really innovative.
And if you are going to just follow the wave of hope of rises and halving, then stick with bitcoin.

I really don't see why this would happen, given the current price of ETH ($269) vs BTC ($10 240), which means you can buy 38+ ETH for one BTC. While there is always a chance that BTC will not succeed in the future, I believe that then all other altcoins will disappear in that case.

Altcoins are just as OP title is saying casino, 99% of them have neither, nor will they ever have any purpose. Their purpose is pump & dump, they do not serve as a means of payment or as a store of value.

On the other hand, BTC has a practical application, it is fully decentralized, has limited supply and the greatest chance of becoming something of a serious player. There will always be those who will go with less resistance (read cheaper option), and invest in ETH, LTC, or BTC clones - let them gamble, their money, their risk.

Honestly, the undervalued coins are sometimes so low that you can literally buy 100 dollars and own probably 1% of the whole market, that is what I like about them so much. Of course, with this new ICO bs and other stuff the owners have like 40% of all coins and they can also print whenever they want etc etc which causes the coin to be really low value, however if you look at the old ones that weren't done with ICO but done by just developing and releasing, some of them are really low value and you can buy a bunch of them and just hold it aside to make as much of the market as you can by yourself.

I personally hold a couple like that and I am waiting on them to go up but if they won't go up, that is still fine because I didn't really invested too much money into them anyway so it's fine.

There is different type of altcoins even if we can indeed speak about casino.

However, we can look at some parameters:

- How old is the coin?
- Was it attach overtime and how did it evolved to prevent such attack again?
- Does it have an active development community?
- Does it play the marketing part at 100% in order to attract people or is it reinforcing it's technology foundation to make sure it will stay overtime?

Bitcoin is a reference. 50% in the portfolio is great. Then you can probably put 5% here and there. I would keep 10-20% for highly undervalued coins such as Feathercoin for instance.

I agree with you man, 50% in Bitcoins is great for every portfolio. We can't deny the existence of some altcoins, and their potentially great future. I have around 10-20% in some undervalued coins, with the price under 10c and market cap lower than 10 million. Who knows what the future holds, the crypto market is changing all the time, making progress, upgrade, I wouldn't be surprised if we see some changes in the top 10 in the next few years!

Buying Bitcoin is pretty necessary especially if you want to play safe and secure your money, you will certainly get an acceptable profit specifically in a medium and long term ( more than 3-4 months ) due to the halving event will be after 90 days I would guess but taking the risk with a plan is essential IMO, try to pick some altcoins especially who have a good characterstics, but I don't advise you in order to waste all your budget on these altcoins, maybe 30% if possible.

Currently, I'm putting my watch on the coins which were launched on the Binance platform through their IEO feature. I believe there are still some coins waiting to get to their purchase values and should definitely rise due to this fact alone. On other hand, if I had BTC, I'd definitely refrain from investing in some single-digit Satoshi coins (trust me, Pundi X is my all-time favorite project but I got fucked by the same project as the value didn't rise but crashed hardly and made me lose around 1.5 BTC which I made through it only). You have some better choices available and I still see Waves to be waving hard once again towards its top.

If you do "diversify" your long term BTC investment into altcoins, just remember to actually take profits after significant uptrends on those ALT/BTC pairs. Too many altcoin investors buy into altcoin season and just go full retard, refusing to sell, turning themselves into future long term bagholders.

To succeed, you need to do the opposite: constantly bank altcoin profits while the gains are easy, and then only long term hodl BTC.

Believe me when I say, you really don't want you capital locked into a multi-year shitcoin bear market. The drawdowns aren't worth the risk at all. If you're just going to ride altcoins down 95%-99% over the long term, you're better off holding BTC.

I'd suggest diversification at least among the major coins.
I tend to agree with that, though I'm mostly for holding bitcoin exclusively.  There are some altcoins I like, but there aren't many and they generally don't represent any of the top 15 on coinmarketcap.  Being able to stake Tezos from a Ledger is appealing to me, for example.  That's the only coin in the top 10 that appeals to me, and I think those rankings are misleading anyway.

Altcoins have come roaring back--at least just somewhat, but that's probably because bitcoin itself has been up significantly.  I do get the sense that they'll be the first to crash if the market takes a dive, and they'll probably fall much more than bitcoin.  The altcoin market really is like a casino, and I'm sort of averse to gambling.

Of course, it would be bitcoins to have the biggest payoff. People usually have huge expectations from bitcoins rather than any altcoins because altcoins possessing lower market caps can even be manipulated by big whales which would never be a good reason for the investors to invest into those altcoins. No doubt that there are some extremely profitable altcoins which might even have a significant growth but mostly, such altcoins move along with bitcoins with might first make bitcoins experience a pump which would then be followed by such altcoins.

Altcoins which I think would have a better price growth are XRP, ADA, EOS, BNB, TRX. I have my hands on these coins which made me dig for some TA but I would not personally like to diversify my investment in several other coins. I would like to keep my portfolio bad with minimum but potential coins.

Bitcoin is more of a safe haven so whether you will diversify with the altcoins, you can still recover if ever the coin you choose becomes part of your loss. I'm still in the recovery process with my alts and learned the lesson there but I think, I'll determine how long I'll be with alts.

Still, at the end of it, I'll remain bullish and long term for bitcoin but I'm ok to turn in for some alts just for playing(trading) it.
Its not bad to always have this kind of consideration if we do talk about alternatives. Diversifying is always been a good option yet this do lessen out the
risk on getting wrecked 100% yet we know we do still have the chance on recovery on other coins we've putted on.

The thing or concern here is that you should target those good or top rank ones rather than considering on putting a shot on low cap/priced coins
hoping for some whale pump. This isnt ideal and also riskier.

Overall, Bitcoin would be the heavily favorite when it comes to long term aspects.
It's good to diversify as long as your choices are considerable and you know how to adapt the moves of the market. But if you're just investing to any kind of altcoin and you have no idea how long you will hold them and then you're more focused on it, I think that's a bad idea.

Hold a certain amount of bitcoin and start your plan there, how long you will hold it and at what price you're willing to dispose it. While in altcoins, you should be aware that you the risk there is much higher than bitcoins.

Basically it all boils down to what risk and reward you are willing to take. Basically Bitcoin is a much safer and higher probability trade because it has the highest chances of being around in a few years and going up in value however keep in mind that the gains won't be exponential. We probably won't get a 100x move unlike some coins like Ripple which had a 140x in over a year.

However with those alts keep in mind that many right now are at over 90% losses from all time high while Bitcoin is only 50% from all time high. I think the best approach is to own a portion of each, some Bitcoin and some alts in case they go big. One issue is that many alts right now, especially the large caps like BCH or LTC aren't really cheap to begin with. They were best to buy in a bear market and not now.

Diversification is good but you understand that it does not work for every body because some people dont really have the knowledge to manage or select the appropriate altcoin 3 or more coins.
I believe the best and safe haven coin is still bitcoin since it halving is also coming.

Though bitcoin is on top of all the coins but I would still go with taking chances on other major altcoins because who knows they'll have their chance in the future and some altcoins now like eth are doing good with the trend and it is trying to catch up so maybe in the future they will cost a fortune to if I have enough money to divide it to altcoins and bitcoins then i'll go for it.

At first I thought about "casino" as in literally casino, like buy altcoins and go gamble with it on a casino and I was confused why these were two options which are totally different from each other. To everyone who assumed the same way the way I assumed, normally what OP is trying ask is the fact that "would you buy bitcoin which is guaranteed or risk it with lower altcoins with a higher chance?".

I personally think you could divide your portfolio a lot in order to make both of it work together, for example lets say you are going to invest 10 thousand dollars right? You can put 5 thousand dollars into bitcoin, 2000 dollars to ethereum, 1000 dollars to xrp, 500 to dash, 500 to stellar and continue like that for all coins you like. That way you would be heavily into bitcoin but also have smaller coins as well.

The question on most investor’s minds is which coin will have the biggest payoff? Is it Bitcoin, the largest coin by market cap, or smaller cap Altcoins?[/i]

the question is already answered hundreds of time by the market itself and the answer can be found by simply looking at the history (that is charts) and it has nothing to do with market cap since that is just an arbitrary number that can easily be manipulated by altcoins.

in short:
there is nothing that can compete with altcoins in short term since they are garbage pump and dumps that can be pumped thousands of percentage in a short time like half a day! there is literary no asset in the whole world that can be pumped like that in such a short time. but at the same time it is a pump so there will be a dump right after it.
but when it comes to long term, since bitcoin is the only cryptocurrency with actual utilities and real adoption in real world not just on exchanges, it has the long term potential and will continue growing no matter what happens in short term. in other words when bitcoin price rises it won't come down.

Why not enjoy both of the worlds?  Grin

I have my largest portion of portfolio based on BTC, but I have some altcoins too, but only the top altcoins, like ETH, XMR etc
I prefer not to invest on unknown altcoins because there is a lot of bad projects and I don't have a lot of time to research, I have to do my regular job everyday, so I'm satisfied with my strategy
Same with you, having a huge portion of bitcoin in our portfolio might be a good option and it seems other members here also have this kind of portfolio. We all aware that bitcoin is a very valuable cryptocurrency that's why some people only stick with this investment. But, we should still diversify our investment to different good cryptocurrencies. Investing in a unknown altcoins will gonna waste your time and money so it's better to avoid it, just focus on the good altcoins. And, if ever you don't have enough time to do research maybe it's better to stick on the altcoins that you know because investing in a new project gives you a hard time like you need to check their background, website, the team behind the project and many more. Lastly, just keep on investing in bitcoin but not also forget to invest in the top altcoin just like what you have mentioned.

Majority will prefer Bitcoin because it is it's year, but there's a huge profit to be investing in the right altcoins, altcoins are here to stay even though the market dominance belongs to Bitcoin, there are a lot of innovation these altcoins are introducing to the community, they will also have their time to shine.

Altcoins are not here to stay, hundreds of altcoins have already died, hundreds have lost almost all their value, and thousands more are just waiting for it to happen. Yes, the phenomenon of altcoins will exist for a long time, but individual coins will not, and this makes investing in alts extremely risky. Risk in itself is always a part of investment, so we should ask if there's enough reward to justify the risk? I believe the answer is no, it's not 2017 anymore, very few altcoins will moon, so the average expected value of altcoin investments likely to be negative (at least relative to Bitcoin).

I'd suggest diversification at least among the major coins.

If for example in a few years, 5btc becomes worth 1 eth them you'll still have 1 eth from now...

A lot of this depends on how much risk you're willing to take and also how likely you think bitcoin is to come out on top over the years (not just in 2020).
I agree, diversification in investments is a good strategy when dealing with Crypto currency because, these coins changes its price over-time based on its standing in the market.

Even though, that the standing of Bitcoin for now in the market is in a sure pump, you could still invest in other coins to gain advantage and secure your money more and avoid total loss in the end when your goal doesn't go as planned.

Altcoin could somehow have a chance and to be more profitable than of Bitcoin "if they are going to the moon". But the question is, are they still have that looks without hypes? And the answer is they don't have. Altcoins still relying on Bitcoin's future and its trend, if Bitcoin will rise the more it become profitable. We live in this thing for many years and altcoins never meant to have many achievements than Bitcoin.

The risk with alts is the time you enter and the time you leave. I get the feeling people arriving now, or in the recent past will feel like geniuses and continue feeling that way as it shits itself to pieces again in year or two leaving them back where they started or worse.

Market psychology is a bitch. At the top, everyone is greedy and thinking "new paradigm" and refusing to sell. Then the rug gets pulled out. With BTC, refusing to take profit in that situation is okay because the upside is virtually unlimited, and the biggest risk (IMO) is losing BTC, not losing unrealized fiat profits.

With altcoins, the issue is much simpler. The goal is to increase your BTC holdings, or at least it should be. Valuing altcoins in USD terms will fuck up your mindset badly, because it will lead to the above "new paradigm" mindset, which usually leads to bagholding shitcoins. Unless there is a compelling "flippening" event, this is the safest trading psychology.

Experienced altcoin traders mostly trade ALT/BTC charts and their risk management perspective is "always be taking profit, always avoid bagholding." Altcoin traders should be ecstatic at 2x or 5x or 10x gains, and they should be consistently banking profit every step of the way. Most people get greedy and let things ride instead. That's just market psychology in a nutshell.

I can't find the quote now, but Tom Lee once made an astute observation about BTC. He pointed out the vast majority of its gains are realized in a very short period of time, and the rest of time is spent ranging or slightly declining. The altcoin market essentially operates the same exact way, but with much bigger % gains and an even more limited window of time.

Indeed. I think the figure he named was 10 days in a year or something for Bitcoin. Those days are almost entirely responsible for the yearly gain and if you miss them then you'll finish up in the red.

I have little doubt that if you timed it right you'll finish up with much to vastly more if you dipped your phallus into alts but good luck getting the timing and choices right with that.

The last two years have been pretty brutal for altcoin investors. There have been countless losers created over that time. But if you managed to avoid the altcoin market during 2018-2019 and began building positions in 2020, I'd say the odds of increasing your BTC stash are very good.

I need to see another monthly close to say with full confidence, but some monthly charts are reminiscent of Q1 2017, before the last altcoin bubble exploded. Lips sealed

Bitcoin is the best choice for crypto investment z no doubt. But all altcoins are not shit, there are many altcoins that are blessing for the crypto world, Bitcoin can't do everything alone, Bitcoin has many lacks! That's why we need potential altcoins like Ethereum, Litecoin, Chainlink, Cosmos, Stellar and so on! So, buy Bitcoin and split your money into various potential altcoins.
Diversification mate, that is what we need to do specially if you are not that ready to take a long term investment, because we know Bitcoin and how long it can grow not like altcoins that may pump by chance because of whales and those manipulative people here in crypto so either Full bitcoin or diversify the best thing is our readiness and willingness.
In terms of long term investment, I only hold BTC.

There's nothing more profitable than trading altcoins during alt season though. I don't want to jinx it, but there might be one beginning now. After 2 years of avoiding it, the altcoin market is finally starting to look interesting again.
I also hold Bitcoin for long term but also i have other altcoins that i trust, like ethereum and Neo that i can hold for long with Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is too volatile. So spread investment across various altcoins is a good idea.

The market value behavior of most cryptos are almost the same, there are just  some cryptos AT THIS MOMENT that are showing green marks such as XRP. Investing to other altcoins would be the same as investing to Bitcoin at this moment, because both has their own risks.
Buy both bitcoin and altcoin would be a great option if you can choose the altcoin to buy. But if you don't know how to select the altcoin then buy bitcoin will be the best choice you can do right now. But I suggest you learn about analyzing the altcoin movement or you can buy the altcoin which has a good position in the market. My suggestion will be the altcoin that already in the top 10 or top 20 coins at CMC so you don't just have an investment in bitcoin, but you also have the other investment in an altcoin. Ethereum will be the best altcoin that you can have, and I am sure that there are many other altcoins that you can buy, but of course, you need to analyze one by one of the altcoin.
But this would make the investor use larger amount of money to invest and given that not all cryptos would be profitable , not to mention that the price are independent from each other, I think choosing only few cryptos would be good especially if the strategy would be paired with deep market analysis.

There is a difference between the altcoins and bumping/dumping models, most of the altcoins (which have acquired a sufficient market capacity) tend to be stable and therefore no much change will occur as they tend to behave the same effect as bitcoin ( will not make much profiles over BTC/X Alcoin pair)

Pumping and dumping models may be profitable in the short term (less than a week), but they have enough risks to make them a more dangerous investment than gambling.

For me, I'd rather put like 50-60% in Bitcoin and diversify the remaining percentage from my portfolio. Since, I am not too knowledgeable in terms of investing through different projects but I'd rather put it on top alts in the market like ETH and XRP. Just making sure I'll get good profit, than taking a lot of risks from a pump and dump kind of coin/token.

I suggest focusing on bitcoin. however, that does not mean all of your assets are bitcoin. I also suggest to have top altcoin, for reasons in the future, maybe some top altcoin will be worth 1 bitcoin, it can be very good to cover the risk of loss. however, many people predict the price of bitcoin will rise, but this will affect ethereum prices.

I don't request loans~
I wanted to choose both tbh. Spread my investment across various altcoins, the top 10 if possible. I'd have a larger part of my investment to BTC ofc, that's why I chose the first one. Spreading my investment towards altcoins such as XRP, BCH, etc seems like a good choice especially with the movements of altcoins recently.

Still, choosing the most profitable side, most would probably go for altcoins, especially since their rises have been quite high when compared to BTC. Just that, a lot are still waiting with regards to what is going to happen to BTC once the halving approaches, and is the result of the current uptrend.

With the recent gains from some of the altcoins i'll take my chances on it and I agree with jackg the profit you can potentially gain from these altcoins still depends on how much you're willing to split your budget.

On the other side taking Bitcoin reduces the possibility of losing too much since big price changes doesn't happen too often with Bitcoin.

If i'm going to be more specific on my split it would be 80-20 I still think Bitcoin would hold its spot for some years.
