In my research I'd found Coinbase, but note it's not one of the ones mentioned here, but seems they could serve a purpose as well for wire transfers.
for now looking to buy about 10BTC so will check out https://localbitcoins.com/ (which seems to be for smaller amounts if truly local) and compare the escrow fee vs. coinbase's transaction fee. No paper trail isn't a requirement here, so that doesn't factor into the cost vs. value eq.

as long as your bank is somehow involved in the process (as you said wire transfer, there is a track record of you buying bitcoin and it doesn't matter if you buy it from an exchange service or from a person.
so if you don't want the record go on localbitcoins and find someone who accepts cash and trade face to face.
You could try localbitcoins or paxful, you can pay with many different methods including gift cards and paypal. Start off with small trades to make sure you do not get scammed and to build up your trust.

use localbitcoins.com as it is the most trusted exchange site. you have to find a seller there with a decent selling rate and buy it from him. always use escrow as there maybe some scammers who can try to scam you. the best thing is the website has an escrow facility which will make your deal more secured and hassle-free. btw, you can also buy btc in this forum. you may get some trusted person here also. check the currency exchange section once. if you deal in this forum with a trusted private party then your deal will get completed more faster and also you may get lower rates as compared to LBC. good luck on buying your first bitcoin !. new to the space. need to buy bitcoin to transact with a vendor who only accepts btc.
