Are you interested in gbp option? As far as I know the only Uk-based exchanges with btc/pound are coinfloor and cex.io. Check them first.

Have you tried localbitcoin? It is quite good and operates on an escrow basis thus your funds and bitcoins are secure when a transaction is made. Check them out.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a good place to buy cryptocurrency in the UK with the minimum of hassle..?  I already know about the bitbargain site but the prices there seem to be a fair bit above market value and I'm having difficulty finding other sites.  Is it normal to sell these assets above market price..?

Thanks in advance.

Localbitcoins is probably your best bet if exchanges don't operate around the area. Make sure you use an escrow though! I've heard that people are able to purchase accounts and use them as if their own.

I've heard that for the UK in particular, you can use a site called quickbitcoin and if you're looking to trade crypto, just move the BTC over to an exchange and use that as your seed money. I would say coinbase, but in the US, fees are a hassle, and they aren't the best with how your bank account gets linked.

Is there any walk-in exchange sites in UK just like bitstamp in S. korea? I also heard there are plenty of Bitcoin ATMs/Kiosk/Teller in europe might as well be helpful. Not sure though

The minimum level of trouble means using central platforms, they require you to send all the required data and after that you deal with them like your dealings with banking services.
This option is the best, but it may take some time to get your money back, but it is a guaranteed option.
use coinbase pro with it.
i recommended online p2p from localbitcoin. you can use escrow or direct cash.
real cash or using localbitcoin escrow better than sites because you can get your money fast.
you can find many sellers there.

Coinbase is one of the best solutions for UK citizens.
I would mainly suggest you to buy the bitcoins from other people, for few reasons:
1.There's no record for the purchase and it is completely anonymous.
2. The fee amount is basically zero, as you are buying from another person who wants to sell his coins, most likely that you won't be charged any additional fees, while buying from an exchange will make you to be charged for orderbook fees.

In that case I would recommend Bittylicious since they're also UK based. See here how simple it is to buy: https://steemit.com/steemsilvergold/@silverstackeruk/adding-bitcoin-to-exodus-wallet-using-bittylicious-picture-post-step-by-step-181

But since you've said "cryptocurrencies", It'll be better if you can post here which coins you are interested in specifically, because only a few number of coins are supported in bittylicious
