Yes a user can double spend. I can sign any of my addresses to prove who I am.. and be sure to always use escrow guys. That is all.
I've had no problems using LocalBitCoins.
Think ebay is probably the best way, imo! 
Tiger Guy started lying to me about how OTC "Required that the same ID be on OTC and on Bitcointalk", which I know is 100% untrue. Once he made that claim, I decided to walk away. I never once said escrow was out of the question.
Also, to be clear, the other deal was made before I even talked to Tiger, and the other person went first. In my experience, it is pretty damn hard for someone to send me BTC, then scam me out of it once it has some confirmations.
I have reason to believe that this Tiger is not the Tiger he claims to be on OTC, but I do not use OTC, so I can't be sure.

Localbitcoins has a pretty vibrant community for stuff like this. Feedback, etc. makes it really usable.

hey dude. I can sell you btc. Check my rep on the BTC OTC site. same name as here. I can always take moneypak or bank deposit.
Edit: OP is not sending first.. hence that he traded with a person with a neg feedback because he has scammed. I requested escrow and he stopped messaging me..
