True, but isn't the "show new replies to your posts" functionality providing exactly that?
On the line you quoted, I was responding to the following part (should've added those lines to the quote, sorry [in other words, I was explaining the importance of "Show new replies to your posts" feature):

Therefore, I think the default setting should be to not  add a topic to your watchlist after commenting.
If you want it added, you can click on "additional options" and should manually select the "add to watchlist" button.

It just seems like duplicating the same functionality at the moment?
Not exactly.
- On "Watchlist", you can add/remove topics & boards...

Interested to hear everyone's thoughts.
Personally, I don't see this as a problem (usually users prefer to get updates/notifications regarding the thread they've participated in, not the other way around [I have to disagree with your proposal]).

Solution:
- Edit your watchlist (after participating in a new thread).

Please correct me if this is not the right forum or this functionality is already available

After wondering why my watchlist kept on getting longer, I just noticed that every post has "additional options" where "add to watchlist" is checked by default. Firstly, I wanted to share it for everyone's awareness, since I didn't realize it before.

Secondly, I want to argue that if I want to review all reactions to my posts, I have the "show new replies to your posts" button. It provides an overview of any topic I ever commented on. Which can be quite a lengthy list, since I also tend to ask 1-2 questions in ANN threads of projects I am potentially interested in. Based on their response, I can lose interest in the project forever.

The current default setting for watchlist is duplicating the same functionality. In my opinion, it should be a conscious decision to add something to your watchlist. Therefore, I think the default setting should be to not  add a topic to your watchlist after commenting.
If you want it added, you can click on "additional options" and should manually select the "add to watchlist" button.

Interested to hear everyone's thoughts.
