I agree. The law sort of makes sense, but I am not sure how big emissions computers in general do produce - the wattage open seems to be pretty low, and most other things are well covered (prcessor, cards) under metal elements. Just anyone selling a case without CE symbol has a risk Wink
While I do not know the details of the law, there probably is a way around it. Sell it as metal or something that is not intended to use with computers. Though I wonder how do they test it - the case is just that - a case, how do they find out if the emissions are within normal parameters - maybe I have a device (VGA or whatever) that radiates 10 times as much as a normal device does, in which case the emissions would be higher...

No, you do not. Basically the case is supposeed to be a faraday cage, and if you read up on them on the internet you find out they are either working or not working, pretty much. Either you have a perfectly grounded protection for a specific set of frequencies, then you basically dont care how much energy leaks inside unless the cage melts, or you dont, then that is it. A working faraday cage is always a 100% protection from electric energy or a non-working one.

Plus, basically, stupid games like "selling as metal" wont work if the advertising makes it clear that this is intended to be used as a case. Courts are over stupid tricks like that for a lon time. Put up a BIG warning, explaining "export only, not EMV shielded, operate in the EU at your own risk" AND explain the risks and you are ok - but then guess what, people won't buy.

Test benches are clear - this is not supposed to be used for running stuff Wink

Testing is done with a standardized test, btw., which is quite expensive Wink

In that case I don't really have to worry as I live in an individual house, the emissions would be too low to do anything by the time they reach a neighbor's house (inverse square law). Also, I don't think that a lot of people would complain, they would just assume that the antenna is crap (well, if I try to watch OTA TV and get bad picture I also assume that I need a better antenna or I need to put it somewhere else).

it is not legal to operate such a cahsses in europe thanks to emission regulations (CE). Sucks. Open boards are "special use only" (like installation / dbut help), not allowed for use in regular operations.

And? I have never heard of the police searching the house looking for computers with open cases. I used one of my PC with an open case for something like 6 years now and used another PC without a case for a year. Didn't hear anything from the cops or anyone else for that matter.

Well, here is the deal. Someone in the neightboohd complains his TV does not work, then someone (not the police) will come with a nice car and find the missions and if they point to you ou are liable for everything, i.e. the damage, a fine AND the cost for finding you which is brutal.

http://www.cclab.com/ce-testing.htm has some legal background.

Basically equipment sold in europe must have a CE seal and an open case can not Wink Closed cases DO have that - no importer want to be hold liable, and test benches obviously are special use and a grey area. Running a lot of servers open is not Wink

Not saying it makes sense. I think doing the same myself - there just is no decent way to really use a lot of cards in one motherboard without a custom case and extenders.

Well, that 'chassis' is a 'test bench' and would therefore fall under "special use only" =P

Nothing on those 3 websites indicate it's a 'test bench' or it's for "special use only".

- Does anybody know whether the Chassis Model A1 'case' is custom build by Cablesaurus?
- If not, does anybody know where I can buy this in Europe?
- If it is, are there alternatives (open case with a place to 'hang' GPU's) available in Europe?

To be fair I have no idea about any rules against open cases and I've always been running my servers without a chassis (in a cabinet)..

Here are 3 different UK retailers selling an open case:

Make your own, stop wasting money on this sort of thing.

I have both and can say the Cablesaurus is well made and not a waste of money for what you get from it. With that said I have compacted my operation and have an extra A1 chassis available, it's heavy but would consider shipping it there if interested.
