The AFCON kicks off this weekend, with the host playing Burkina Faso in the first game, and Ethiopia hosting tournament newcomer and African brightest side Cape Verde in the second game. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this is going to be fascinating because there are several European young stars players who have pledged to represent their parent country, and we also have players like Ighalo who have returned from retirement to compete for the championship.

My Predictions
Cameroon & Cape Verde

Both to Win @ 3.50 odds

There are 24 teams competing in the competition, which are divided into six groups of four teams, with only the first and second place teams in each group progressing to the next round. So, which country do you back and why?

Oh wow! Shocked
Didn't know he was Nigerian
Ohhh sorry he is even his team mate Ndidi is also a Nigerian there so many of them but some chooses to represent England national team instead. But we love and cherish our own in respective of where they choose to represent or play for, we always love our own.
I'm aware of the player to be Nigerian and it good you guys don't disowned and respect the players decision even when they choose represent England national team.
I guess the reason for their decision will be genuine.

Yeah every Nigerian in sports are making the country proud right now from football to Wrestling, UFC etc....they do it for the pride of the nation and we give them all the support they need from home.
I am only aware of football and UFC (which is dominated by 3 African guys). Are you sure about wrestling cause I am not active in it lately?

Sierra Leon vs Benin

There was a covid19 test results controversy between the two countries, the covid19 results presented to the Benin republic on their arrival claimed that 5 players of Benin republic tested positive to covid19 including their Captain. A result declared as false by the Benin republic FA.
According to their coach
This incompetence by CAF is very disgraceful to say the bare minimum; CAF was supposed to spearhead the covid test and results by spreading out teams to monitor this in every country; such that only approved results by CAF Covid officials would allowed the tie to be played. Well the deed is done; and a CAF Statement addressing the issue and punishing the offenders would be appropriate.

This is disgusting it's show the incompetent of CAF and how backward the African football is. I thought general test was conducted on these players by CAF before the round 5 and 6 of the qualifiers. I think the Sierra leon were trying to manipulate their way through, it's unrealistic how 5 key players from Benin suddenly developed Covid19.
Frankly speaking this is a big disgrace to CAF becasue they should have put all necessary machines in place before they embark on this journey. In my second thought: nothing is impossible when financial rewards are involve in Africa, maybe the script was written and played as usual in Africa politics; what a shame to my face. Why not allow them play and later award penalty to the Benin to win as the script was drafted to frustrate the Sierra Leone...our shame dey shame me!.

Super eagle of Nigeria confortably won their match 3-0 against Lesotho, a good game by our darling team dominating and taking possessions throughout the match and Iam happy to watch the fans adding glamour with their melodious music in the stadium,  although the pitch was bad disallowing free flowing passes of our players, Onuacho goal was a masterclass  this guy is a good striker, while the midfield trio of ndidi, etebo and Nwobi did well, I also enjoyed the sparking form of this No 10 shirt enyimba player anayo Iwuala when he came for chukwueze, I believe the super eagle are back on track waiting for the commencement of Qatar 2022 qualifier.

Edit: The biggest upset in today's matches was averted in the match between Senegal and lowly rated Eswatini with Senegalese equalizing in 96 minutes extra time.

definitely that moment in life when we stopped to look in the sky and realized a great emptiness, my country's team (Mozambique) Is a great emptiness. we have already changed many coaches, a lot has changed, but there is one thing that has never been able to change: take away the crap from the politicians of the government party managing football, today I will watch one more defeat, it will be years just watching defeats.

interestingly the odds are very balanced, I wonder if these odds-maker are aware that my country's team is a team without hope, is a team that has failed and has no chance of winning today

Its sad actually to see these kind of things in african football a lot of corruption and not only on mozimbique but also on other countries as well football has became politic and it is a waste we posses a lot of players with potential as we've seen a lot of legendry players were from africa.

This is the only match I want to watch it's going to be a die-hard match for the both nations, Sierra Leone President is not messing around this time he promised  $20k for each players if they win against Benin Republic today. Sadly but I think Benin deserve to qualify and I'm backing them to.
I think the benin team will quallify they are the strongest side they lost only to nigeria that we know are strong and plus lesotho need a 2 0 win to pass to the next round because of the head to head matches and it will be difficult for them to not conceid goals in this game.

This is really sad mate! do you feel the government are responsible for the failure of your national team to make it on the international/local level? Don't you think the grassroots isn't good enough? There are bad governments all over African soil but that has nothing to do with the performance of the national team in my own opinion. Take a look at Cameroon a country almost in civil war, take a look at Nigeria battling with corrupt politicians I think your country should focus more on the grassroots.

Today's results 29th March 2021

Angola 2-0 Gabon
Burkina Faso 1-0 South Sudan
D.R. Congo 1-0 Gambia
Egypt 4-0 Comoros
Togo 1-2 Kenya
Malawi 1-0 Uganda

Today's result looks good. I'm particularly glad to see Egypt win so strongly. Liverpool's Mo Salah even got a brace from the game.

The results above are from Group B, D and G and so far it means that Egypt and ofcourse Comoros have qualified from the group stage; and they are joined by Burkina Faso, Gambia and Gabon.

Algeria vs Botswana
Zimbabwe vs Zambia

will take place tonight
.

Zambia's game has already ended. They won 2-0 against Zimbabwe so they should be up in second place with 6 points, next to group leaders, Algeria.  I think all games have ended for today. Algeria demolished Botswana by 5 goals to nil. Botswana on the other hand was just unfortunate against  dominant team like Algeria.

I'm not an Afcon fan of the year but I'd try to stay updated for as much as possible. Thanks for putting this one together, igehhh.

Is this a sign of South Africa losing significance in global sports? Because in cricket also they are going down. They won the 2019 Rugby world cup, so don't want to comment about it.
I can't see this reducing the South Africa team, this can happen to anyone on the tournament, the last African Cup was not as good to our team Nigeria as the 2021 has done to SA side. Even those who made it into the tournament aren't good as the SA side sincerely but the god of soccer helped some. So, let cheers the SA side up for what they are good at currently.

I don't want to deviate from the topic, but the fact that South Africa failed to qualify for the main tournament is very disturbing. They used to be one of the strongest sides in Africa (at one time they had a world ranking of 16 as per FIFA). Is this a sign of South Africa losing significance in global sports? Because in cricket also they are going down. They won the 2019 Rugby world cup, so don't want to comment about it.

I haven't even heard about the Sudan football team before. I guess they don't rank among the top-100 countries as per FIFA. They have never played in the FIFA world cup. I am not forgetting the fact that they managed to win the 1970 African Cup of Nations, but after that they were on a near constant decline. That changed in 2018, when they managed 3rd place in the CHAN 2018.
Yes they are not a great team in africa they do not qualify for the final tournament but this year they did an exception  and they played very nice we've  seen similar cases like zambia team in 2013 when they were able to win the cup.

Agreed Sudan is not known to be a good footballing country, nobody expected them to knock South Africa out of the upcoming African cup of Nations, I think the few time I watched them I was impressed, the first game against Ghana and the second game against South Africa which they won 2-0, the seriousness and the hunger to win in them were terrifying. The other surprise of the qualifiers is Comoros and Gambia making their way to their first AfCON.

I thought that South Africa was one of the strongest teams in the African continent. But they failed to qualify for the final tournament, as they had only 10 points from 6 games. Sudan won all 3 of their home matches (against Ghana, South Africa and the weak São Tomé and Príncipe), while South Africa managed to win only two (their home game against Ghana ended in a draw). It will be ironic to see South Africa out of the tournament, despite the fact that the total number of teams have been increased from 18 to 24. Anyway, congratulations to all the teams who managed to qualify.

Yes it is normal with seasons that keep changing every year my thing with a new generation of players in each country the composition of the South African players is different from previous years besides that the factor of playing at home also raises the morale of the players and I've seen  sudan do that.

As it stands Sudan leading South Africa by 2 goals to Nil and that implies they'll be advancing instead of South Africa. It's been a pretty terrible performance from South Africa as they are yet to register a shot on target with over 76 minutes played already.
It's a shame that south Africa won't be gracing the African nation cup with there presence, they have built themselves as one of those too African team, but losing to Sudan is a shame, but no disrespect to Sudan they earn what the worked for a country with economy problem and hunger, I think this would bring happiness to the small country, been bias as a Nigerian am happy that South Africa won't be in the tournament.

Pretty bad news for the West African countries, South Africa are known for beating the North Africans now that they are out who will do the dirty job? Even the Ghana coach wanted south Africa to qualify for the same reason. South Africa with a lot of good home-based players couldn't get a draw from Sudan to qualify? Hmm, anyways the best team is winning.

The way African football is played is often different from other continent, there are less goals and home team always be the favorite and had opportunity to win at most times.
Hey Man! the previous results say otherwise looking at the previous scores you could agree with me that the game is different now, there have been so many goals especially in the last round 4 and 5 of the qualifiers. Yes the Nigeria team always find it difficult to trash or score more against their opponents looking at their previous stats, they are always comfortable after getting a goal, and the second problem is the set of players up front, they are known stars and everyone want to be the talk of the town, they use the national team call up as an opportunity to sell out themselves in Europe. No team play.

Despite securing the win, I wasn't by any bit impressed by the Nigeria's team performance, they lacked the cutting edge and If this is the kind of performance they put up in the tournament when it gets underway, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't make it far in the tournament.
The way African football is played is often different from other continent, there are less goals and home team always be the favorite and had opportunity to win at most times. Nigerians play is somewhat uninteresting when away and so they managed to win with 1 nil.

Congratulations to Gambia on their first ever AFCON. Although, some argue that they only qualified because the number of participating teams was increased from 18 to 24. What do you think?
This pure unprofessional excuse, 18 teams, 24 teams does not matter, these guys were pure class and deserved qualification. They beat Kenya and Togo, drew with Egypt in the first leg, qualified with a game to spare yet people feel they don't deserve it because the teams were increased to 24 teams.. I don't buy it.

Agreed. They deserved the qualification. Most of the big tournaments are now increasing the number of teams and I believe that it is a step in the right direction. Football needs more diversity and the smaller nations need to be given a chance to compete against the top teams (not just in the qualifying tournaments, but also in the main championship). The number of participating teams have been increased even for the FIFA World Cup. From 2026 onward, there will be a total of 48 teams taking part, with most of the increase coming from AFC and CAF.

Nigeria won and qualified even if they didn't they would have qualified as Sierra Leone and Lesotho had earlier drew. The team needs improvement at all angle. The last time we met with Algeria in the competition, there were a lot of unprofessional display and lack of commitment. Etebo was a fantastic player then, as fate would have it we couldn't beat Algeria. If we need to get somewhere this time around, We need the team to be very serious.

There's still a lot a fixtures to look forward to for today and I'm mostly interested South Africa vs Sudan, South Africa needs at least a draw to qualify alongside Ghana, while a win for Sudan will guarantee them a place at the expense of South Africa, I'll give the South Africans an edge here.

Nigeria finally broke the unbeaten record of squirrel of Benin today beating them 1-0 ,
Nigeria just has the chance, the goal was after 90 minutes of the game, I mean the goal was during the little extra of the time given. But Benin Republic had already lost in a game before, it was Nigeria that won the country at the time too. And of course, Lesotho and Sierra Leone are just bonus mark for as they are not playing good at all.

I wonder how many teams from this continent can qualify for the World Cup? The level is clearly lower than in Europe and South America namely.
I hope you can see the topic title, this is not about Europe or South America, this is about Africa, and precisely about Africa Cup of Nations.

Am not happy with my country (Nigeria) economy or the severe situation in it, but in terms of soccer everyone is United, I wasn't lucky enough to watch the game life, such a pity a nation national news didn't show it, but I followed it up online, I must say am thrilled Nigeria had the winner in a very late time, am much respectful of the defense and I think their is time for improvement in the team.

Nigeria won over Benin, and they are now alone on the top of their group
what surprised me is Cameroon lose in Cape Verde, which puts Cape Verde in a position to reach top two position in their group and next phase, congrats to them
Madagascar lost their match from Ethiopia, but they still have chances to reach top two position

I wonder how many teams from this continent can qualify for the World Cup? The level is clearly lower than in Europe and South America namely.

Today's Fixtures 27th Match 2021

Lesotho vs Sierra Leone
Benin vs Nigeria

My predictions:
Lesotho 1-2 Sierra Leone
Benin 0- 2 Nigeria.

Correct score: Lesotho 0-0 Sierra Leone
                         Benin 0-1 Nigeria

Nigeria is already qualified but still have two outstanding matches to play with Lesotho and Sierra Leone, Benin will be struggling with these two clubs to remain at 2nd position.

Nigeria finally broke the unbeaten record of squirrel of Benin today beating them 1-0 , it quite a tight game the host playing defensively all effort by super eagle to break their opponent defence was all futile and thwarted the likes of osimen, iheanacho tried all their best unfortunately a shot hit woodwork of the beniniose until onuacho came to our rescue,  no doubt Nigeria dominated the match from the beginning to the end.

My predictions:
Lesotho 1-2 Sierra Leone
Benin 0- 2 Nigeria.
Four matches have been played, this is the table:

Nigeria is playing away, Benin also really trying, but this game should not be hard for Nigeria to win. Nobody yet know how the outcome will be but I am 95% certain that Nigeria is not going to lose, it is either win or draw. About Lesotho and Sierra Leone, the game looks unpredictable as both countries players are not performing good.

Looking forward to Benin-Nigeria  tomorrow, I hope  Iheanacho and Ndidi bring back their forms from Leicester to help foster the developing super Eagles team. Victor Osimehn seems to be a bad signing for Napoli or am I not being consistent with the Italian league of late? The last time I watched Super Eagle played, the defence was a bit bad. The coach needs to work on that we need to top the group and show case our form in the incoming tournament.
This is actually a very crucial match to be played today in Benin, the last meeting was terrible where goals from Victor Osimhen and Samuel Kalu completed a 2-1 comeback win for the Super Eagles. Super Eagle's victory today will automatically secure them qualification for Cameron's afcon 2022. Benin coach said yesterday that his side are set to miss their forward scorer Stephane Sessegnon, I think this will give the super eagle the opportunity to secure a point today.

Josefjix, can we honestly say that the Nigerian side is a "developing team" where we have it predominantly made up of foreign based players? The Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr needs to start showing more faith in the home based players than in the foreign based ones if he truly knows what he's doing.

Sourcing for home based players depends on a lot of motivations and factors one; do the home base players have the agility needed to compete with their opponents from different countries? Are the fans interested in local leagues to be familiar with the players that would be introduced to the team? How do we trust a national team in the hands of amateurs? You and I know the Nigerian League still needs a lot of improvement to be viable in the rating for the players playing there to be tactically intelligent.

I could imagine that  Grin after they won the trophy few years ago they've been putting up some great challenges against the top nations. The results means nothing though as they are already out, Algeria and Zimbabwe are the teams going to the next round.
Who could ever imagine that Zambia would draw with Algeria (3-3).

Good to see Iheabacho lighting the EPL up once again and I hope he brings this form to the super eagle, I trust Ndidi whenever he put on the green jersey he always delivers. Osimehn was not a bad signing I think the whole Napoli team is just shit this season, he had some injury challenges but I'm sure he would turn things around.

Yeah the defence was very poor I hope he got that fixed up.

Interesting matches and results we have here. Every country is doing its best to qualify for AFCON. Let us not be surprised to see the top African nation not qualifying for this year's African Cup of Nations at the end.
Football is unpredictable. Who could ever imagine that Zambia would draw with Algeria (3-3).

Good to see goals in Africa nation's cup qualifications, even in Burundi vs central Africa and eswatini vs guinea bissau this game are those types that may in time memorial end goalless, I think Goals in matches makes it exciting and this once are becoming exciting,
This has to be the most exciting AFCON qualifies round ever, it's really exciting to see the smallest countries turning up against the bigger footballing nations in Africa, the likes of Gambia, Malawi, and Kenya all securing points against the bigger boys. The most surprising result for me so far is Guinea 1-0 Mali and Cape Verde 3-1 Cameroon. Cameron struggles continues..
