Does anyone know if Linus has ever said anything about Bitcoin? I would be interested in what he had to say about it.

Linus is always very specific in this regard.

"F*!?k desktop!, give kernel, all I care about"

The guy who designed the new linux scheduler on the other hand is with us. I believe he wrote the cgminer as well, Kon Colivas. He's lurking in the miner forums

Keeping with the save the Earth/Whales concept, "The Linux Foundation will donate $25 USD to the World Wildlife Fund for every new individual member who joins from November 20, 2013 through December 10, 2013. "

https://www.linuxfoundation.org/about/join/individual

Still no BTC option that I know of though...  Undecided

I'm under the impression that it's better to donate to the distro(s) that you like, rather than the foundation. The foundation gets all that big corporate money and a lot of the distros don't get very much.

Is this thinking flawed?

In my opinion, donating to the foundation is like donating to a 'save the Earth' fund as opposed to donating to a distro's 'save the Whales' fund. i.e. there are no whales if there is no Earth.  Though if Debian starts accepting BTC I will be sending them as much as I can afford Wink

Nothing wrong with doing both.  Linux wouldn't have the market penetration that it has without the work of the foundation.  Keeping a massive opensource project on track is kinda like herding cats.  Solid distros are important but what has made Linux an economic force is the fact that it is everywhere (android, routers, set top boxes, media players, etc).

To the OP I am already a member but if they allow paying membership dues in BTC I will renew mine in BTC.

From their website

Does the Linux Foundation store my credit card information for the annual recurring charge of the membership dues? The Linux Foundation does not store your credit card information. The Linux Foundation uses the opensource project Ubercart and Drupal to administer registrations. Ubercart uses Paypal as the payment processing gateway. When you sign up as an individual member, a recurring Paypal profile is created on Paypal's servers to administer the annual recurring charge.

One thing to find out is if there are any ubercart integration solutions for Bitcoin.  If they can drop in integration through bitpay or coinbase and be up and running quickly that may influence their decision.

Linus is certainly aware of it.  Linux Mint - the most popular distro of them all - is accepting bitcoin.  Yeah, I'd be interested in his take on bitcoin.

Now that the FSF accepts BTC donations again, this has become much more likely. This is the last bump I will do - let's see if we can get to 100 before 6/1!

Nice, 21 new members. Linus just got Variable Zoom, 3 Tux frag grenades and a laser sight in the guise of Bill Gates!

I'd be so incredibly happy to add some open source/free software to my (growing) list of regular donations, and Linux distro developers could possibly do with the resources, judging by my recent tussle with getting a distro (any distro...) installed on an EFI based machine just recently. And the Linux Foundation itself is obviously a more than deserving case.

I have to check if Gentoo accepts Bitcoin / Litecoin / Feathercoin donations.
Funtoo accepts litecoins. Wink

So far that's 8 new members, which would probably be enough to pay for a new grip for Linus's flamethrower  Grin

I had no idea I could support them via PayPal.
Yes, first of all I'd like to know what Linus Torwalds thinks regarding this topic,
but I guess he might be enthusiastic about it.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I have to check if Gentoo accepts Bitcoin / Litecoin / Feathercoin donations.
If they do I certainly will donate, since I've learned almost everything I know about Linux through Gentoo.
I feel indebted to them.

Perhaps the survey questions should be expanded to "I want to hear from Linux first", "Yes, 10% certain", "Yes, 20% certain", etc.

At least I can't provide an answer in the form of yes/no.

This is somewhat related to https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/time-for-a-renewed-push-to-get-eff-to-accept-bitcoins-125405 and all of the pros and cons can probably apply here as well.

Currently, The Linux Foundation only accepts Paypal for their membership dues. I am starting this poll to determine how much interest there would be in adding the option to pay with BTC. I am a long time Linux user, but am not in any way affiliated with The Linux Foundation; though I would like to be Wink
