Island much better choice, humans can remodelate any part of the island with enough resources but i dont see may ways to do something against a storm in the middle of the sea... Also i completly agree with
Maybe a micronation could be a more worth effort.

A micronation could be much more convenable.

maybe even find and buy a free island

The problem is that there are no "free" islands around. Every square inch of the world's land surface is actually claimed by someone. That includes even Antarctica.

A container ship will be too small in size for an "island". There will be space only for commercial and residential buildings in this island. For food products, the islanders will be 100% reliant on outsiders.

hee-ho.
some part of an island might be hostile, sure. but all part of the ocean can be dangerous to ALL passengers under extreme weather condition.

so I'll pick an island, thank you very much.

I'd rather stay where I am, than go live on a "bitcoin island" ship tbh.

How about an oil tanker, like in the movie Waterworld. If it were half full of oil, we would have enough fuel to travel the world for a long time.

How about both, ship and island?

Well, I wouldn't mind living on an island, with actual trees and greenery.
I couldn't live on a ship (container or otherwise) for ever.

A ship have to be registered in a Country Registry. Flag country have sovereign rights (Law Enforcement, Justice, etc.) on the vessels, crews & passengers while on high seas; so, I'm not sure she's the right choice - ships are always shes.
Maybe a micronation could be a more worth effort.

Can a ship get its independence from a country if it floats forever in international waters? If never is the answer then the ship will have to be built (lego like pre built sections) in international waters, more as a platform/barge for containers than a full container ship.

While taking apart old containers, turning them into homes is nice, why not turning them into homes on a container ship instead?

Pros and Cons for the bitcoin island solution (versus a container ship)

Pros:

An island is a simpler and cheaper solution. An island is a... simpler and... cheaper solution.

An habitable island will provide you with food and water, from land, sea and even from the sky

An island has fixed geographic coordinates. You cannot steal it with a couple of tugboats

Cons:

An island has a random shape. Some parts are even hostile to any form of human habitats, leaving a lot of space out of reach

If a part of the island gets damaged by an event, you cannot swap that section with a new part

Most if not all islands belong to a country already. You end up renting the space until that particular country got tired of you and start taking away everything you spent years building

An island has fixed geographic coordinates and is never in international waters

 Cool
