Do you Think Cryptopia Was hacked Or They are just Trying To  Run Away with peoples money  !!

As I know their cold wallets were hacked as well as hot ones. I can't imagine how does hacker could hack it without any insider job? I tend to believe to the second option.

Another epic scam from a trash exchange where most airdrop tokens are listed right away and dump right away. What can we expect from this exchange like cryptopia? I believe that they are already transferred the funds of its users from their hardwallets and the transfer from binance was just a bluffed. Well, their world is getting smaller since the wallet address can be tracked and thanks to decentralization.

HODLing is an art, not just a word...
exchanges scam their users all the time specially when they are small and failing to make enough profit and cryptopia has been having some troubles making ends meet lately prior to the hack so it is not unheard of for them to actually pulling a scam and running away with a big amount of money and then coming back months later like nothing happened.

I do not want to blame someone or say something offensive, but it seems to me that these guys artificially create the appearance of a similar situation. In fact, nothing bad could have happened, they just could have taken our money. This is just my opinion

We cannot believe it once they still have no proof that they got hacked. Because that may be their trick to stole our tokens that is in cryptopia exchange. But if they release valid reason on it, we may believe it.

I don't know what to say 100%, but as i know all exchanges, or almost all hold their coins on cold wallets and the coins are never on site, the site of exchange is just the interface where we see how much we have and where we make the trade, exchange. I can't explain how coins are stolen if exchanges use cold storage. I think is just a try to run away with coins.

NZ police had published report about this hack, so don't think it is an inside job. But, you can never be too sure.
Yeah that is a really biased question and we can't really be sure about that. Though, the report to the police gives us the impression that they are really trying to fix this thing.
Other time if people really to keep their money safe, never ever trying to save your cryptocurrency on an exchanges site.

Cryptopia already involve police and i think cryptopia already make a transparant way to explain to their customer. I am believe cryptopia is decent exchanger and not run their customer coin. New Zealand Police already make investigation and i am believe cryptopia will run their bussiness again in near future

They claimed to have reported the incident to the police so what would be great is if they published the police report to prove that it was indeed a hack and not an inside job with one employee disappearing with a shed load of ETH.

in my opinion even the police will find it difficult to track hackers because of the blockchain technology and this in my opinion is beyond their capacity so it will be difficult even though cryptopia has a lot of evidence of hacking by outsiders. So far, have we ever caught the exchange hackers who have been arrested?

With the news we have received, we are yet to conclude on whether they truly got hacked and that there is something else behind it.
Well, anything can happen, because to investigate a situation like this, might be a little difficult.
Then, if they truly were hacked, they will have to pay a compensation package to the account holders on their platform.

Hack attimes is funny, because some are caused inside job and some are caused by overlooking small vulnerabilities which hackers can exploit, I think it is a hack, looking that the hacker(s) move the funds directly to another exchange to sell speak is something, I don't think Cryptopia team would be that daft to make such costly error

Anything can happen in digital world even the constantinople update was not spared with bug in one of the five updates. Exchanges are high risk being targeted by hackers because of massive coins and tokens stored in a single hot wallet. Hackers are smart and they are developers too and they know how to comprised a system. That's why don't leave your coins or tokens in an exchange even if they claim they are safe. Stored your digital assets in offline wallet as they have the smallest chance of getting hacked.

Unfortunately you can hack everything related to electronics, it all depends on the level of knowledge and the level of technology hackers. Even cryptocurrency can be hacked with a sufficient technological level, which is now hardly available to anyone. However, we cannot know all the details.

It is difficult to say whether the team is involved in this or not , but I think the team is not very profitable to close their project , as this exchange could bring constant funds and it is extremely profitable than to take all the money at once.

Exchanges will always remain an easy target for hackers because of the high rate of transactions going on and also because of the  millions of dollars worth of  cryptocurrencies they have in holding.
Exchange hacks are not easy nor cheap but a person with the required expertise and funds can attack exchanges and any security lapses can be very costly

Hacking an exchange still seems to be one of crypto's biggest problems. Always a pity to see people lose their coins there. I am curious how it continues with cryptopia. Hopefully, at least people will get their coins back, which were not stolen by the hack.

Besides that, we don't know how good cryptopia to handle their security from attack from the outside. And I don't think they will reveal what's going on with their site and maybe they will explain the simple explanation to their members. It is why that every exchange need to check their security by doing a routine checking so they can find a bug and they can fix it before the bad things happen. I hope that the other exchange doesn't get the same things as cryptopia.

it is a doubt that an exchange with a high end security will be hacked like simple as that. the factor of inside job has a great possibility, though it is a right of the customer to file case on a platform that promise to protect your investments.

I also think that it may be possible, but if I believe it is just new, unknown people and it is very likely that they have committed something from the scams and flying money, maybe  Roll Eyes

Whatever the real happening there, hackings do oftenly happen if there's a big money involved.

These hackers have been there since the early days of crypto and they don't have any other thing to do but to steal the funds of exchanges. On the other hand, these incidents can also be taken advantage of the victim and they just can reason it out if they are playing dirty. But let the result of the investigation come out, wait for it.

Until the result of the investigation is not revealed we cannot con-firmly tell that whether they wantedly doing so that they can go with users coins or really hacking happened. Till then we can only guess and comment on the situation. It can also be that due to lot of new exchanges are coming and cryptopia is loosing the market and are in loss so for this also it can be insider job. So that they can show that their exchange is also big one that it can get hacked.

In today market hacking means the exchange has got lot of investments and users trading, so that it can get popular and then they will refund the users their coin like this they show reputation and gain market share and more users will try to join the exchange and revenue of the exchange will increase. This way the exchange advertisement can also be done.

Before this incident, were there any reasons or indications that the exchange suffered a loss and did this ? This incident has been reported and being investigated by the authorities, so let's wait the result.

If they will run the money of the users then they will be caught easily.
The wallet in exchange are marked and once the tokens there and coin are move out again they will be the one who are doing it.
As the website now is closed and the exchange is not working now.

Yes, it is regrettable that the Cryptopia market must be hacked like that, because the Crypto world is very vulnerable to hacking, because the Crypto market is money, and sometimes has a thin security, so it is easy to hack. Hopefully the case that befell Cryptopia can be a learning for other exchange markets.

I think there's more story than this so called hacks. First, as what others have said, trying to liquidate the stolen coins to Binance? bad move. Second, what took Cryptopia took so long to act and freeze the withdrawals? I'm 100% sure that the authorities will caught who is really the people behind this heist specially that Binance has all the logs of the deposits.

Good question, because I speculate that if you're a smart hacker, why would you moved your funds to Binance and be trace? So it means that hacker is too dumb or maybe it was no hacker after all? Maybe a inside job or something? someone who knows how to move funds but not knowledgeable to use mixing services? Hmm....

Given that the "hackers" were actually dumb enough to send money to Binance, police probably has a lead on who's trying to liquidate the ethers.
if the hackers are really that stupid and send the coins to an account with a real name, that would not be smart. but surely they use a purchased account at binance. either way it is a pity that cryptopia was hacked.

But cryptopia has not been unable to provide legibly proof of the hack activities except for the missing etherum and tokens

What bothers me is that, how did the hackers  have enough time to cart away multiple tokens

Who knows about it. It should be answered after an investigation only. However, in simple analysis, Cryptopia is quite impossible to run away with people's money. I think every exchanges will avoid the such cases that possibly kill their reputation. The sustainability of the exchange must be the priority for them, it is much more valuable than money. In this case, I assume it is purely hacked cases.

I think cryptopia has been hacked and there is no scam from them to get away with the money.
They handling of the hack seems to be very professional and they have turned on the authorities very fast.
That is why it is hard for me to believe it is a scam.
That's what I'm thinking too since they are a registered company in NZ then it would be hard for them if this hack issue turn out to be a scam or fraud though exchange hacking is not new on crypto space because they are one of top list target for hackers.

Do you Think Cryptopia Was hacked Or They are just Trying To  Run Away with peoples money  !!

it is impossible to answer this question to be honest. and not just for Cryptopia but generally for any other exchange that gets hacked like this. there is always a good chance that when some exchange claims they were hacked, they would be lying and there were no hack to begin with. there isn't truly any investigation to clarify that either.
sometimes the chances are more when the exchange had some problems prior to the hack because we see them having the incentive to run away. and in case of this exchange they started showing some red flags a while ago so it is possible.
If they wanted or planned to run away with money, why should they then invest their money in the development of the exchange? Expanded staff, changed the site design?

The hack took everyone by surprise actually. New Zealand police was actually doing investigations with regards to the acclaimed hack. I think it's high time crypto enthusiasts started storing their coins in personal wallets with extreme security measures. I saw a tweet from CZ Binance saying storing coins on Binance is safe, I'm not disputing that but I think storing coins in any exchange for a long time is like keeping salt outside hoping it never rains.
