The 50 BTC policy was implemented a long time back, when the price of Bitcoin was about $1. I think this needs to change. Can we request the moderators?

First, moderators have nothing to do with it. Only the owner of the forum, theymos, can change the situation. And secondly, there has been a lot of discussion about this in the Meta section for a long time. And so far, no change. You can search there for such topics.

To get some perspective, I have come across something like 26 name changes over the last nearly four years (which I obviously won’t unveil), and although I’ve only been able to identify a subset of all the name changes, it does seem to denote it being a very exceptional event. Out of the ones I detected, there may be an odd donator or vip, but the vast majority are not. Also, most are of higher ranks, with just a few being lower ranks.

I was going through a topic here and had this question because I have a friend who registered using a name that was emanated as a result of typo auto-correct.
He is of course a newbie in this bitcoin space and would want to know how this error can be corrected or better still, Grin what is the doable solution.
Unfortunately not. Maybe its fate to have that name. If the account is just really new then why not register on using different email. Its really hard to change a username here once your set but you can always request to theymos if the reason is valid then it will change to that.

This is not the case because I don't think @theymos will accept your PM of changing just a username of your friend because of the auto correct feature. There will be many such requests if he start doing so and it's best is to create another account making sure he double check before registering on the forum as you have to press the button after making sure all the things.

But he can continue with the same account also if he intends to learn here in this forum and keep on with the same username or is there anything offensive which he wants to be edited in particular?

The donations in the past was possible because of the relatively low prices for bitcoin but now it's way too much to acquire that VIP tag anc custom title and if you want to see the past donators you can see them here

Having multiple accounts on forum is allowed but following the forum guidelines that they must not violate any rule is important so tell him about this also.

There have been some instances where users have edited their username on the forum without donation and that's only by convincing @theymos with a valid reason like this one :

Changed username from Coolcryptovator to COOLCRYPTOVATOR

So you can try but don't think it will help a newbie account and it's needed at all.

Since it a newly created account, I would just advice your friend to just create another account because the procedure to be followed and the amount of BTC that need to be donated will cost a lot and whereas it just a newly created account so just tell him to create a new account.

Changing of username on the oum is very possible. It's just for a fee that ain't cheap and if you feel its worth it, then you just pay the fee and have your username changed. Its just one way to discourage the practice and I think it's one of the best decisions ever to have been made by the forum administrators.

Bitcointalkforum is a scommunity where users with no idea of what gender or whom the other person looks like, even there nations are mostly unknown except for few obvious locale participations, complete anonimity and so, everything is done based on trust. Now imagine you been used to a particular user, certified to be trusted and then, the user changes there name. Same goes to tagged users. It would bring some sort of confusion to the forum and that doesn't help so well.

So if the user is of that importance to you, pay the outrageous fee and have it changed if Theymos is disposed and that kind.

You can edit (change) your display name if you have a VIP badge that requires 50 BTC in donation. It is impossible and unrealistic nowadays.

There is The Cryptovator who has changed his name more than once. Am sure he did not pay that and neither was he a VIP. It can be that theymos looks at the person's aim and motive in wanting to change the name and also contribution in posting to determine whether to grant the request or not.

I was thinking since the early donators did theirs when BTC was worthless the administrators should rather reduce the VIP donation to an amount of BTC an average forum user can afford.
The forum is no longer accepting donations of any kind anymore.
According the the admin, the forum can operate conveniently with the revenue generated and doesn't need more money.

The only way now to change one's display name is by making a formal request to the admin. Fom the accepted requests, it needs to be for a salient reason before it gets considered, so you can't just ask for a name change, cause you like a new name.

we really need to start keeping crypto as a real asset, just because they are cheap today doesn't stop tomorrow from happening.
Crypto Bitcoin is multipurpose and that is not a bad thing, every bitcoin user can't behave in the same way, some will hold, some will spend and some will do the two, bitcoin is money, so why wouldn't some people spend it when they can, it doesn't have to be an amount that is as big as 50BTC, but spending some satoshis in places that read "we accept bitcoin here" is great for the network, to encourage the merchant accepting it and to help with adoption.

I think back then when this donations were made Bitcoin was more of a currency compared to now that it has become a store of value (asset)

Ha! So someone must have paid 50 BTC to change their username in the past years? Mehn I thought that Pizza guy will be the first man to regret spending BTC back then for pennies, we really need to start keeping crypto as a real asset, just because they are cheap today doesn't stop tomorrow from happening.

No one paid 50 BTC just to be able to change their name on the forum, it was only about the members donating that amount to the forum - and from that donation, some additional benefits for such members of the forum obviously resulted. Your problem (and most others') is that you don't consider Bitcoin a currency, which is its primary function, and people who once paid 50 BTC or 10 000 BTC were obviously not in it all just for profit.

If in 10 years 1 BTC will be worth xx times more, does it make sense to pay anything with it today, or will we also be classified as unreasonable people because we didn't know how to save what is valuable?

From forum FAQs:

Q: I want to change my forum username. What should I do?
A: You can either donate 50 BTC to become a VIP or PM theymos asking to change your username (although he rarely accepts such requests nowadays).
The 50 btc donation was put in place when Bitcoin was trading around 1$. Doesn't make much sense now to donate over a million dollars to get your username changed.

If he's a newbie then he should just open another account with the correct name, since he doesn't have much to lose anyways.

Changing just a name with 50 Bitcoin doesn't worth it. It better he open a new account since he's a newbie.
It's one of bonus when you donate 50 BTC to the forum. It should not be a reason for your donation.

I believe the admins have strong reasons to not allow users change username easily. It can result in more scams when scammers can change usernames around. Not only in the forum but also in other platforms, if they allow users to change account usersnames, it should be only one chance, after you create your account and is given a random name. After you change it once, no more change to change it. Same reasons, to avoid scam exploitation.

Theymos usually doesn't change the username and as you mentioned, it's only the display name which is changed. But it's not that the username is unchanged for all users.
If theymos changes someone's display name due to his/her privacy, he changes the username as well.
For more information, read the post made by theymos, before.
I knew that post of theymos. Such cases that have username changed, not only display name changed is very rare.

I don't know what are such cases honestly. Lot of donators or VIP members have display names changed. You can check there in Stats on active & merit status of Donators & VIPs

Additionally, in rare cases, you don't have to achieve good net effect to be approved by theymos. One case (about 2 or 3 years ago) just woke up, and made a request, then it was approved a few hours later. Reasons are because of personal identity, dox as I recalled. That user has its name changed to a random one, and abandoned that account too.

You still have chance to change the display name (not real username that is unchanged for all users) by sending your request to theymos.

Others have shared what needs to be done in order for your friend to be able to change his account's name. it would be better for your friend to just create a new account, but if the account in question has merits and your friend are having second thoughts about abandoning the account because of the merits, he should ask theymos and hope for the best.

You still have chance to change the display name (not real username that is unchanged for all users) by sending your request to theymos. Chance is low if you are a newbie account and does not have reasons to convince theymos.

Please read another post of mine for more details.

Alternatively, it is easy for you to abandon this account and create a new one with the name you want.

There is no such feature here, although a request could be sent to the administrators. But since the account in question is a newly-created account, as RikandMorty1 suggested, your friend would rather create another one. So rather than make posts using the account with the wrong username, it would be better to have another one with his preferred username. That would be the easiest route. While some requests for name change are granted, I think it takes more time.
