Right now, I don't think it's possible for any altcoin to pass Bitcoin because it's still the key currency. The main reason why the "public" knows cryptocurrencies is the Bitcoin.

But in the long run, there will be another currency on the top of all the cryptos. Maybe Ethereum. The "flippening" will happen because the bitcoin has too many flaws and disadvantages that other cryptocurrencies do a lot better.

depends on how fast the number of people (and machines) that use it will grow + how well the scaling problems of bitcoin can be resolved. personally i like projects that address scaling explicitely, e.g. iota and substratum both have concepts in which the network becomes better with rising number of users.
