Thanks for the advice! I am running windows 10. You assumed correctly Phillip... I am already planning my 2nd build  Grin

I was just trying to figure out if it was wise to maximize the space on my current rig with a 7th card before I moved on to the next one.

been there done that  not worth it.

if that 6 card build is solid just do it again.
and maybe one more time.

then think about squeezing in a pcie splitter taking you from three sets of  6's to three sets of  7's

I just completed my 1st rig build a few days ago. I have 6 gtx 1070's, msi z270 mb, evga 1300 g2 power supply. It's been up and running for a few days now.

All 6 slots on my motherboard are already used so can I use a M.2 to PCIe adapter and add a seventh gtx 1070 to the rig? Are there any potential issues with doing this or is it fairly common?

Of course you can do that, it depends on mainly two factors.

1 being what sort of OS you are using? guess you might have already enabled all the required options on the mobo to run more than 4 cards, you may need to update the drivers based on your OS.

2 being getting a good M.2 PCIe adaptor, this is important because a friend of mine tried to build a same RIG using my config, but he hasn't been able to run the 2 M.2 slots on Z270P mobo!!

So make sure you get it on smoothly and like @philipma1957 said you may build 3-4 RIGs with same config Cheesy

Dont be stupid cheap or pennywise pound foolish

you know in your heart you will go past card 7 Grin

So since you know you can do six easy peasy   buy the same mobo and add cards to it slowly.

soon you will have 2 six card builds good luck.

A lot of people put the 7th/8th card to M2 adapter and they are working fine. Just be sure that your PSU is good enough to power all cards.

If you have slots around 6 numbers in the mother board you should have the same number lime using the card with the PCI riser line. For the 7 card you should go with the another mother board comes with the complete rig set up.

As my knowledge your board will not bear the another card connected to same board which is not taken more cards on it.
If you want to make profit, go to mine the two band mining with the claymore mining software but will be heating more in the cards your room also nay heats double.
