luckily I'm on linux  Cool.
I bet 'luck' had nothing to do with it.

unlike most windows installations that come pre-infected, GNU/Linux requires a conscious decision to install it.

What do you mean?

I mean the choice to install a GNU/Linux OS is a decision that is made in the mind and not 'lucky', it is a considered and calculated choice. Buying a PC/laptop and using whatever OS came with it (which usually happens to be a version of windows) is down to 'luck'.

So most people are using windows which is due to luck, but those running a GNU/Linux distro is down to skill in picking an OS.

I was just browsing rededit Bitcoin and came across this post

"Russia Bans Financial Companies From Bitcoin Transactions."

With a link that looks like a typosquatter of "washingtonposts.org"requesting a need for Java to watch the video.

This guy with the same email was spamming his fake Washington Post links here last night. If you're on Windows and clicked it you probably have a virus, luckily I'm on linux  Cool.

So would the computer become infected from actually downloading the java file itself or clicking on the washingtonposts.org link?
How should I know? I don't use Windows.

scan it with several programms and you will know it.
Done. This is the .exe file that the Java wants to download and run (that alone is a bad sign). Stay away from it.
