you can also try a wireless repeater as well ..  for gaming they tend to add to lag but for bitcoin mining it should be a problem at all
there are other ways to boost single reception without adding an antenna..  if your going to go the high gain route you may want to replace the antennas on your access point and not you avalon.  you can also check to make sure your not running on the same channel/freq as other wireless items  depending on why type of AP you have you want to check to see if other items ( cordless phones baby monitors etc  ) are not on the same channel/freq if you have.  if your running an older AP an upgrade might be in order too.

you've a few options depending on your setup ..

Initially i thought you the antenna on your avalon went out but this is a bit easier to trouble shoot

and heres a good example of what i means by male and female ..

my wifi router will accept the 1st one however my antminer will only accept the 2nd one..  you use to be able to find adapters  But depending on where you are it might be a bit of a problem finding a hardcore electronics store.  your current antenna should unscrew off right ? unscrew it and see which end is on there

also depending on who your cable provider is  they may be able to just run you a NIM ( they look like the older cable modems) to your laundry room and then you can run a switch off that and cat 5 from there ( its what i did in my garage)  the best part about that for me at least was that it was treated like a service call and didnt cost my anything.

the downside is the tech guy you'll talk to on the phone wont have an idea what your talking about and you will need to actually talk to the technician when he shows up.. ( i called and told them i needed another cable drop to get them to send someone to my house)
I'm fine with WiFi and would rather not have anything else drilled. As for the current antenna, as I said, there isn't one that is visible unless it's the small wire comin out the back with the LED on it.

the other option is hawking

I know the Defcon crowd use to use them for the yearly wardriving contest back in the day  I have not played with their resent stuff but not to long ago they had some pretty decent antennas.

Are you trying to just replace the antenna or get better signal?

I really do miss the old days when you could goto radio shack and simply pick stuff like this up over the counter.. now its all cell phones RC cars and batteries
Little bit of both, I get a good enough signal so it lets me put the noisy basterd downstairs in the laundry area.

Just found these two things, antennas high gain, wont know if the wire bit will work though until I crack her open tomorrow to find out how the current wifi works.

I'm not sure about the avalons but i've made a cantenna for the antminer and it still works .. all things being equal i  dont see why you couldnt do the same thing here

if you can find them you can sometimes find "high gain " wifi antennas in electronics stores but i'm not sure if the connector is male for female .. on the antminer it was male and the antenna is female.

That's why I would also buy the port, would just need to drill a hole for it, so I guess you would say I'd be after a complete upgrade kit.

.. i dont own one but I really cant see why not .. if you strip it the plastic away you'll see its really just wire.. i dont see why something else can be made rather quickly
I'm just curious to know if I'm right about the existing antenna being the wire with the LED on it.

Will have to crack it open tomorrow and look all the while trying not to burn myself lol.

Ok, so I like the fact the machines wifi ready right out of the box but for the life of me cannot find the existing antenna. I can only assume it's part of the wire coming off the back with the LED. Assumin I'm right, I dont need the LED bit so the whole wire could get tossed.

If it is somehow replaceable I'd like to get somethingg way better like whats seen on the below pictured machine (not mine, ebay image).

So ya, anyone ever replace an antenna on an Avalon or at least look in to it out of curiosity ?
