<...>

When i start up the miner, hashing board 1 and 2 have a small red light on. Board 3 does not.
but after a minute or so, the 'fault' light flashes once for a split second, the fans spin down, and the small red lights on 1 and 2 shut off and the red light on board 3 turns on, and stays on.

<...>

Well, the flashing "fault" indicator indicates that the miner has detected an error or malfunction in the board # 3 or in the power supply, which leads to a slowdown in the rotation of the fans and disconnection of the miner. Also check the data cables connected to the boards. Try to connect another power supply, if the error persists, then run and test the miner with one board connected, for example, start with #1 and #2 and #3 disconnect.

Possibly the 3rd board is faulty or overheating.

Better check the dashboard of this miner under the miner's status to see which one isn't working.

And read the kernel logs for possible errors you should see why it's not working.
Like the above  said post the kernel logs here so that we can see the cause of why it isn't working.

You can also try to test all hash boards one by one to find the culprit you can follow the guide below.

A simple test is CAREFULLY pull the cable from the controller that goes to board 3.
What does the GUI say? It should mine even with 1 bad board just show a bunch of  xxxxx for the chips.
If you post the log there might be something that people here can see.

USE the code tags (# above) when posting so it's easy to see and scroll, just don't copy past it in the post.

Also move this post to the hardware section. Will get more eyes on it there.

Totally new to the mining world.  I have some solar panels, and I was hoping to both generate a little spare heat in the winter, and also support the network with a miner or two.  So I bought a used s9j on newegg... from china... and its not working Cheesy
I have no idea where to even start, and was hoping to take advantage of the knowledge of all you kind hearted strangers.

Is there something obvious going on here?  Something specific to look for in the kernel log maybe?  My very uneducated guess is board 3 is dead or faulty, but I'm pretty out of my depths.

UPDATE
Here's the kernel log, I have no idea what im looking at here though:
