The only way I can think of for mining on xbox or wii to be worth while is to have a coin that is exclusive only for wii or xbox, then it has a good potential.

But the chances of someone coming out a way to exploit it is too high.

Is someone willing to explain me a bit how does this work (mining). I have heard much about mining but don't know from where to take enough information.

its not advisable to mine btc with anything other than the newest and strongest asic  miners. mining with CPU or gpu is just a waste of resources.

It was for academic interest. Even then the particular specs may lend itself to good miners for some of the alts which uses mixed algos.
PS3's cell processor can handle a lot of floating point operations per second. It could possibly be used to mine a CPU only coin very efficiently.

The thought of mining with a wii seems so ridiculous for some reason Tongue

Consoles generally have weaker GPUs compared to normal desktop computers. Yes, you can mine using it but buying an ASIC would be more practical than shortening the lifespan of your console with little to no returns after deducting electrical fees.

Solo with 3x knc titan. 1000mhs scrypt.

Makes about 0.5 btc per day, and I quit my job.

Wow nice!

I don't know to much about mining stuff.. can you tell how much did you spend for that miners?

xbox uses ATI GPU, so in principle it should be able to mine GPU only coins profitably. How easy it is in practice or is it even worth burning up the box for remains to be seen, xbox suffers from poor ventilation issues.

I'd like to see, a Xbox mining coins, whilst it's idle and then depositing this, as credit, back in to the internet, for the user to benefit from, when he/she plays.  Grin
Given this would cost the user substantially more in electricity than they'd see in bitcoin, I doubt they'd consider it much of a "benefit".

Now that Microsoft accepted BTC as a payment method, it might also lead to some developments on the console side.

Oh the possiblities with this...

Xbox:

PRESS A AND B RAPIDLY TO MINE! ABABABA

And on wii you could swing the console up and down to mine bitcoins!

You never know, Microsoft recently officially accepted Bitcoin as a method of payment, maybe next they will incorporate miners in xbox'ses.

Can happen.. why not..

Dont use your xbox man, mining is an asic based game, you just have to figure out the best way to play It.

I think the security issue will be the major problem in trying to use an XBox or a wii for mining, and why would you want to destroy it for mining Smiley .

The modifications, will probably destroy its use as a gaming console.

They are not designed for that. Thats why it makes no sense to mine nowadays and you have to develop some chip etc to pass the security just for your small profit

Yes you can, but you won't get anything out of it, it is designed to let you play games not mine.

GPU is designed specifically to calculate floating point. Game consoles happen to fit in the same category.

Eventhough game console has a high spec doesn't mean it used for mining.

But If console can be used for mining, I'm sure the price will be more expensive

You can probably mine with almost anything that has a processor of some sort but you don't want to do that Grin Needs to be profitable or you will lose more money on electricity, better to sell your old consoles and buy bitcoins Wink

You can get around 35 - 40 KH/s from a PS3 mining scrypt but you need to have Linux installed to be able to use the mining software. I'm not entirely sure if it is still somehow possible to install Linux these days, I know Sony removed that feature a while back. You can also mine on your android device but you'll get next to nothing. You should maybe look at investing in a small hardware miner like the Gridseed or Blizzard/Fury, they only cost around $25 and you'll get better hashrates.

If you're really interested, what you would do is flash Linux for Xbox/Wii onto your console and download a miner.

Does anyone have a picture of this? I am curious seeing an Xbox mine bitcoins xD

I heard that someone mined with like hundred of Playstations 3. Playstation has very powerful cell processor in it. If moded right it can be really cost effective, especially now. But well, ASICs are still better options if you want to hardware mining. Or invest in cloud mining. Your choice.
It was through linux the old ones allowed it linux to dual boot out of the box, they're not good for Sha (bitcoin) but maybe for some CPU coin but I don't know if actually cost effective.

Possibly a modded Wii or a modded Xbox ORIGINAL, the others don't have enough security breaks to allow mining. The PS3 used to be able (through linux) but the newer ones don't allow linux so say if someone jailbroke it and made a mining package it is possible.

Now consider this, you won't make a damn thing, this is due to their weak power and they would use much much more electricity then any coin made.
