your BTC is not actually in your wallet.dat file.. it's actually on the blockchain. think of your wallet as your "password" to access your assets.

Yes you can. Synced wallet is required just to send.

Hi

Is it possible to buy bitcoin even if your qt-wallet is not synced?

My computer keeps overheating and switching off, every time i have qt-wallet open.

The price of bitcoin is going up all the time, so I don't know if waiting until I can get the computer fixed is wise or not.

Many thanks for your help.

Yes, you can always send the bitcoin to your address.
Your wallet does not need to be online or synced in order to "receive" the bitcoin.
Also, don't forget about encryption and backup of the wallet.dat file.

If you are still having problems with bitcoin-qt, maybe you should take a look at other lightweight clients such as MultiBit or Electrum.
