In US, do a dwolla transfer from your bank account to mtgox.

In EU, do a SEPA transfer from your bank account to mtgox.

Those are the safest and cheapest.  Of course, it can take a few days.

Anywhere else, do an international wire.

Or you can go to #bitcoin-otc and find someone accepting paypal or MoneyPak.  Check the seller's rating so you know who you're dealing with, or you might get ripped off.

i send the money with good old mail and they added the amount. A bit down of course...

This is another good option, and it would be nice if bitcoin could be more easily accessed for the masses, but there is a little bit of legwork that needs to be done to get going. Nothing wrong with it, and it makes you work a little harder to get those BTC's Smiley

Thanks, talk to me Will.  I only want 0.51 bitcoin, how can I pay you?

unfortunately Paypal and other mechanisms like that can be reversed so you'll struggle to find anyone who is willing to accept that for bitcoins, even for such a small amount.  As a result, most people will only accept bank transfer or trade with people that they already know/trust.  I would highly recommend that you go to http://britcoin.co.uk - pay the money you wish to trade (0.51 is less than 6GBP you'll have to transfer) into the account details on the site, then just buy them there and transfer them into your wallet.  It's no slower than any other method, unless you can somehow persuade people that you can be trusted.  Sorry but there's a lot of scams on the internet and not a lot of trust after the recent hacks.

Good luck!

if you're in the UK then you can use http://britcoin.co.uk or http://bitmarket.eu

I've been using britcoin and it seems to work for me - the bank transfers take 1-3 days depending on which bank you're with.

If you're really desperate for bitcoins I could sell you some Smiley

From what I have seen you can sign up for a dwolla account http://www.dwolla.org and tie your bank account to dwolla.

Then you can buy bitcoins on most of the exchanges directly from dwolla.

Haven't tried it yet though so I'm sure others have done it.
