Bitcoin client versions 0.5.0 and 0.4.0 had a serious wallet encryption bug where your private keys could be easily extracted from the encrypted wallet.dat file.

Litecoin source code was forked from Bitcoin 0.5.0, therefore the Litecoin client also had this bug, so it was decided that it's better not to give users a false sense of security, and the temporary solution was to grey out the wallet encryption feature until the bug is fixed.

Since then, Bitcoin 0.5.1 and 0.4.1 (and the more recent versions) have fixed the bug, by creating a "born-encrypted" wallet, though the procedure is a little inelegant because it requires shutting down and restarting the Bitcoin client.

I suppose that the wallet encryption bugfix will be merged into Litecoin soon.

BTW because of privacy concerns it's recommended that you also encrypt your wallet.dat with an external app anyway (e.g. 7-zip or gpg) before uploading it to 3rd-party hosts like dropbox, otherwise all the non-privkeys data (for example your wallet balance) will be out in the open.

Today I decided to move some LTC from an old encrypted wallet to a new one.

I (closed Litecoin), moved wallet.dat aside, and let Litecoin create a new wallet.dat.
Then I wanted to encrypt the new wallet, and found that the Settings->Encrypt option is grayed out!
Also of course Settings->Change Passphrase is grayed out. This is a new wallet I just created.

Any idea why this is?

Also, I'm seeing in my wallet:

Balance: 0 LTC
Unconfirmed: 0 LTC
Number of transactions: 1

No actual transactions are shown in the TX tab.

WTF is wrong here?

Upgraded now from 0.5.0.6 to 0.5.0.8, and it doesn't seem to resolve anything.

I even deleted the wallet and started the client, and I still can't encrypt (although number of tx is now 0).

Litecoin seems to be way buggier for me than Bitcoin.
Any chance to branch of the latest stable Bitcoin and merge the Litecoin changes into it?
