ok  iget that i need those special hardwares to mine I guess i have to buy one to test things out

Well for altcoin minings, you can mine with GPU, but you're still not going to get anything done with a crappy one. Ethereum is worth checking out, i got links on my sigs for the tools needed.

I always liked the simple gui window and easy to programmed menus.. Sgminer is king and I wish there is a gui version of it

Well, i guess there kindof is. There's tons of watchdog software for this. I used CGWatcher at some point, but now i just run a command line. Beside SG/CGMiner's UI work just fine, even though its just text.

guiminer now comes in many flavors , scrypt, neoscrypt, ect , ect the only way I was able to get them to work for Amd based video gpu is to run an older amd 5850 gpu and install older amd drivers.. When I removed my 5850 and installed an 8870 the drivers were to old and the guiminer didn't work , I updated the drivers and it still didn't work .. Removed the 8870 and put back the 5850 back in .. It still didn't work .. I had to uninstall the amd drivers and reinstall version 14.7 from 15.30... What a pain in the ass ..

Just use newer miner, probably cgminer or sgminer and use a very very very simple command line put in a .bat, its not hard. But with a CPU he's not going to earn anything anyways.

no

TLDR: You cannot mine BTC with such hardware anymore. Look for a Gekkoscience sidehack usb ASIC for 25$ or so.

beat you to it with the quick short answer Grin Grin

At op using a cpu is like using a teaspoon to dig a hole for a foundation to a home.

so the software dropped  support..

a usb stick is the way to learn sidehack's compac is the most powerful.

I think its more like....

Mining a block requires a earth mover to fill a dump truck to process for gold, while using your cpu is like picking up one grain at a time visually inspecting it  Cheesy Cheesy  Tongue

No im not mining btc i want to mine altcoins

same problem you will need at least a gpu.

you need to post in alt coins to ask

lastly you need the right versions of guiminer that support alt coin mining.

unless you want to mine PPC coin

that will mine with the compac stick as both   btc and ppc use sha-256

I mine some PPC coin and have hit a block with the compac stick for about 33 usd

Yeah... and as short as it was, there is'nt much to add. There should seriously be a sticky with the super common questions that get asked over and over everyday, though.

Hello I am just new here and I just got in to this mining. I watched tutorials on how to mine using your computer like you have to put conf files and the username and pass along with port should be the same with the guiminer but whenever i press the start mining it just says stopped at the bottom right. I am just new here so I  am currently testing things out still planning to buy those mining hardware if I get into it but for now i wanna test it
