Yeah, the forum was attacked and hacked. The attack may have been from avatars, so new people are disabled.

Simple way to solve this, disable all avatars, new, old, and remove the code from the template so no one even sees it is an option.

I can't even use one of the forum's default avatars, pretty annoying specially if you don't like having your username with no picture attached to it. People said this is due to some attack that used avatars as an exploitable point.

Any plans on making avatars useable in the future?

I'm sure there is, but that question has also been asked several times and has so far remained unanswered. You could PM a mod/admin if you wanted.

If they were disabled for security measures then all existing avatars should have been disabled too.

lol. I don't know the exact details, but there must've been some reason why. I don't think older users can change their avatars either, so maybe the bug was exploited by changing avatars, not whether somebody had one or not.

Hey,

For some reason, I can't upload my own avatar or link to one.

Any suggestions?

No one can. It was disabled as a security measure. There's several threads about this on the first page of Meta.
