Ledger Nano stores private keys. I'm not sure, but I guess that it checks the sertificate when you try to log in to any of your ETH addresses via MyEtherWallet for example. Plus you need to confirm any signing operation by phisical pushing of the button. So yes, it's really safe.

You can get phished with any device or gadget. If you mistakenly log on to phishing site and enter your details, it will not matter where your fund is, it will surely be stolen. So don't get phished. Metamask, MEW will protected you from been phished!

Yes mate,it has built in private keys so even theres virus and malwares in your pc it wont get your keys,thats why i choose this over other hardwallets. Phishing page, links are the famous one because its easy and fast to capture all the required data.
