Can anyone believe another year has gone by already. And what a year it was.

So as many of you pointed out last year that the Salvation Army might not know what to do with the coin and that was the case as it sat at the offices most of the year. I have recently found out that someone will be handling the promotion and sale of the coin pretty soon and if anyone here is interested I will try and let them know how they may be able to bid on it.

All the bitcoin that was donated last year is still on the coin and any new donations this year are very welcome.

Thanks again everyone and happy holidays.

Well hanging on to it has made them a lot richer!!
Well done you for putting it all together Smiley

I called around to a few Salvation Armys today and asked about what they do with the coins they get. The largest donation I found this year is certainly a record. Someone in the Wisconsin area donated 40 gold coins this year in two different areas fora total of 80 gold coins.

http://wbay.com/2016/12/24/salvation-army-strikes-gold-again/amp/

Most of the people who decide what will be done with the coins appear to be off this week so I didn't get much info other than that is seems all the SA's have the items appraised.

I did call my contact here locally but she coordinates the volunteers and doesn't know much about the finance department which I guess handles the coins that come. I did explain to her a little how bitcoin worked and how there was a public address for the coin and then a private key under the hologram but when I do speak with the person in finance I will let them know the coin is worth more I guess untouched an some here may be interested.

Really nice news and it would be an interesting coin to see if they auction it here.  I'm not aware of any other coins from smoothie being marked "community funded".

Hey Mr. Bong glad to see this will go and help out the SA, dont know you have a contact their or not, but i think it would be a good idea to tell them to auction it off here on the forum as you might be surprised how much it actually bring in.  Just a thought.

I will be following them and what they do with the gold mimi coin and this coin as well and will post here if they decide to auction it off.

It took awhile and didn't go exactly as planned but the coin arrived today and was dropped into the Salvation Army kettle this evening.

I did snap some quick pics of the coin for everyone and even though the coin has been donated there is still time to add some bitcoin to it, and any bit helps.

Coin address - 1BTCA3A5xuN6NoM6STcak3L5nPGE2noAKx

Did the coin actually fit into the bucket???
Seems like the capsule might be just a bit too big.....

It did fit but barely, I took a short video of the bucket and a young man who works at the store helped by putting the coin in while I recorded.

I think the SA could get a lot more funds if they turned around and auctioned the coin.  I'm sure the "community" stamp on the coin would make it fetch a high price.

I tried following the process last year on how they auction off the gold coin or coins they receive but never found out when it was or how they had done it.

I know for the past 12 years now they have gotten gold coins donated in loving memory of mimi and each year they sell them off or auction them off so I will find out more about that and post when I do.

Sorry I wasn't able to get a better pic but the coin is lasered 2016 SA community funded

I think he had to melt it and make a tinier coin.
Anyway this project seems to be pretty nice to me, I make consider making a donation of few mbtc's Cheesy.

Thanks a lot for your work, god bless

Oh thanks was hoping to get a bunch of smaller donations added. Kinda like peoples change from the store.

I want to of course do this again next year but will start a bit earlier I think with things. Also next year would like to try and have multiple coins loaded and donated in different parts of the US and the world by other bitcoin users.

I have updated a payment address for now where the funds can be sent and if no one minds I would like minerjones to handle the chart and entries.

Also wanted to respond to some of the posts about the idea.

I hope by doing this it will help introduce the Salvation Army to bitcoin as another way to raise money for the charity. The main goal for the kettle campaign is to raise as much as they can to stretch throughout the year and if bitcoin can be used to help raise even more that's great.

One part I was concerned about is some of the people who sort the money might think its just a glorified chuckee cheese token and toss it aside. So towards the end of the campaign I am going to let my contact at the SA know there will be a special coin in that kettle and to make sure it doesn't get lost or anything.

Someone else asked about how they will sell it and to be honest I am unsure on that process. From what I understand they take any gold and silver coins and have them checked out by someone and then they have people bid on them. I am curious about this process and had asked a little last year about it but will find out more this year. I will make sure with my contact that nothing foolish happens with it and it is redeemed or sold for its full amount or more.

I would hope the SA just redeems the bitcoin on the coin and keeps the address for future donations should they ever come in.

Hope this helped answer some questions and any more please ask.

Thanks

Can we speed this up somehow please? Minerjones can give out the places to everyone as they've done 256 spot raffles before (which shouldn't be an issue now). As far as payments are concerned, you could just use one of your own addresses until you get the donation one.

Most charities now have people and departments that  deal with "unusual" and High Value acquisitions.
These people will have access to various stores of info including of course the internet. Their objective is to research the item and find its appropriate and true market value where possible.
Seriously high value items will them be processes and in some cases forwarded on to high end Auctions and sales rooms.

What is the Salvation army gonna do with a physical bitcoin??
They will probably end up giving it away as a gift for a lucky kid in their other programs, since they would have no clue what it is, or sell it in one of their thrift stores. I agree though - auctioning will be much more beneficial and probably bring in more money than them selling it at one of their stores. Maybe a volunteer will know about BTC though...

This raffle will have 256 spots, each spot will be 0.002BTC and the proceeds from this raffle will be used to benefit the Salvation Army.

Every year I volunteer a little time and ring the bell for the Salvation Army during the holidays and this year I wanted to figure a way to raise some extra money for them and introduce them to bitcoin.

One of the ways to do this I thought would be to get a loaded physical bitcoin coin that I can drop into the Salvation Army kettle.

For the coin this year I am going to get a 1oz Silver Lealana coin from smoothie and he has agreed to mark the label something other than buyer funded. Was thinking 2016 SA or community funded or something and any suggestions would be great.

I hope to have some other raffles, auctions and donations throughout the holiday season to fund the coin as much as possible before it is dropped into the kettle on December 24th.

The limit will be 25 spots per person to make this fair for everyone and of course if anyone wants to donate more than the suggested entry price that would be great too.

Please post below to reserve which spots you would like and I will update payment address as soon as I get it.

Thanks
