Right now BTC-e is also under investigation with the prosecution looking to "prosecute certain individuals" so this thread is now obsolete.

The key is that prosecutors don't just have to prove that they converted dollars into bitcoins -- that would be legal. They also need to prove that Faiella and Shrem knew they were facilitating the drug trade (or at least knew they were helping with money laundering). Apparently, prosecutors believe they have the evidence to persuade a jury of this.

But do you trust that a courtroom of idiots who can't even figure out how to create a Skype call will know how the Blockchain works? Take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfJ1tTGjyS0

These people are supposed to be able to look at Blockchain.info and tell if someone is laundering money or not? Good luck!

RIP Mommy
He went to jail because he "laundered money", not because he dealt with BTC.

Nothing to see here...

In Bitlegal, the status of BTC in US is given as "Permissive". I think now it is time to change it to "HOSTILE".

Indeed. Actions speak louder than bullshit at government hearings. Any bitcoiner in the U.S. is subject to prosecution at any time for numerous victimless "crimes" (of which there are so many that nobody, only ever acting in good faith, can possibly know which ones they're committing on a given day) whether they actually committed it or the government used its identity theft expertise in fabricating "evidence".

More victimless "criminals" having the boot stamping on their face forever. Just a matter of time before every single localbitcoins seller is prosecuted for not harming anyone, because "economic liberty must be destroyed"!

What was the problem this whole time? Trading Bitcoins in the US is illegal!

Nobody cared, now what happened?

How did nobody see this coming?

ATM Bitcoins illegal too?

For the owner of the ATM for sure.

Everyone is putting themselves at risk of getting arrested by using US-based exchanges. Why would you trust a court that does not understand how to use Skype to know the difference between using Bitcoins legally and illegally?
