Is Coinbase my only option?
I would suggest trying to become a liquidity provider on localbitcoins.com. You can generally buy bitcoin at below market cost, however you will need to wait for people to take up your offer and would not be able to buy exactly when you want.

Sounds very interesting! can you explain more in newbie terms?
What you would basically do is setup an offer to buy bitcoin on LBC at something below the market price (it is priced in percentage terms of the bitstamp rate, so you could set it to 90% of the bitstamp rate). Then you would need to wait for someone to accept your offer, fund escrow, then you would send the other person payment as per the terms of your advertisement (You would say how you plan on paying the seller - you could choose to send them a western union payment for example).

I have always found that coinbase have always done great deals when it comes to buying bitcoins in the US so this may be one for you to take a look at.

I usually buy from coin.mx if I am not doing a p2p trade. U.S. based, and once you get verified (not hard) you can do instant deposits from credit/debit card and fully Instant buys. A little while ago the selling price used to be higher than average, and a good arbitrage opportunity could be had. Now I think the prices have leveled a bit more with the average market price. Their support is A+ too from my experience, so they get my trusted vouch for them.

I dislike Coinbase. They have started banning accounts connected with BTC gambling, and I've heard numerous other problems from people. Plus a 4 day wait to get coins if you don't have a Visa card, get out of here. 4 days in the 24/7 crypto world might as well be 4 weeks to me.

Hope this helps,
